The sixth-born son of the pro wrestling dynasty founded by Stu Hart and his elegant wife, Helen, Bret Hart is a Canadian icon. As a teenager, he could have been an amateur wrestling Olympic contender, but instead he turned to the family business, climbing into the ring for his dad’s western circuit, Stampede Wrestling. From his early twenties until he retired at 43, Hart kept an audio diary, recording stories of the wrestling life, the relentless travel, the practical jokes, the sex and drugs, and the real rivalries (as opposed to the staged ones). The result is an intimate, no-holds-barred account that will keep readers, not just wrestling fans, riveted.
Hart achieved superstardom in pink tights, and won multiple wrestling belts in multiple territories, for both the WWF (now the WWE) and WCW. But he also paid the price in betrayals (most famously by Vince McMahon, a man he had served loyally); in tragic deaths, including the loss of his brother Owen, who died when a stunt went terribly wrong; and in his own massive stroke, most likely resulting from a concussion he received in the ring, and from which, with the spirit of a true champion, he has battled back.
Widely considered by his peers as one of the business’s best technicians and workers, Hart describes pro wrestling as part dancing, part acting, and part dangerous physical pursuit. He is proud that in all his years in the ring he never seriously hurt a single wrestler, yet did his utmost to deliver to his fans an experience as credible as it was exciting. He also records the incredible toll the business takes on its workhorses: he estimates that twenty or more of the wrestlers he was regularly matched with have died young, weakened by their own coping mechanisms, namely drugs, alcohol, and steroids. That toll included his own brother-in-law, Davey Boy Smith. No one has ever written about wrestling like Bret Hart. No one has ever lived a life like Bret Hart’s.
For as long as I can remember, my world was filled with liars and bullshitters, losers and pretenders, but I also saw the good side of pro wrestling. Hart's account of his professional wrestling career is almost literally blow-by-blow, with detailed descriptions of the choreography of many of his most prominent matches in the former World Wrestling Foundation and the now-defunct World Championship Wrestling. (And, yes, he freely admits that the outcomes are determined in advance, while the wrestlers work out the actual moves for themselves.) To hear him tell it, everybody hailed him as the best damn worker in the business, a storyteller with the comparative artistry of a De Niro. But the manipulative schemes of WWF head Vince McMahon (and several of his colleagues) kept Hart from reaching his full potential as a champion until injuries sidelined him for good. The memoir goes deep into Hart's family history—his father was one of the pioneers of the Canadian pro wrestling circuit, and his brothers and brothers-in-law followed him into the business. About the Author
Though Bret Hart is now retired from wrestling, he is recognized around the world as one of pro wrestling’s all time greats. In 2006 he was inducted into both the WWE Hall of Fame and the Geroge Tragos/Lou Thesz Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame. His appeal also transcends pro wrestling; Hart was voted one of the top fifty Canadians of all time in the CBC’s Greatest Canadians series. He recently completed a cross-Canada tour reprising his role as The Genie in Aladdin.

Greatest Wrestling Biography Written By The Greatest Wrestler Ever

Love love love this freaking book! It really let's you inside his life and gives you insight on what it's like on the road in wrestling. Loved it from start to finish! Although the ending made me tear up and shed a few tears because Bret Hart is easily the greatest professional wrestler who ever lived and his career did not end the right way. He had to live through losing his baby brother Owen, who I loved as well. He lost him in 1999, then he lost his mother in 2001, then Davey Boy Smith aka the British Bulldog, his brother in law and my third favorite wrestler of all time behind Bret Hart and Owen Hart, then he had to deal with his crazy family namely his two sisters Diana and Ellie, then sadly he had a stroke sometime after Goldberg gave him a concussion after botching in a match and stupid WCW kept asking Bret to fight again after he had his concussion. Then the worst thing happened after the stroke and concussion ended Bret's career, the man who made the legends and most specifically the man who made most of the legends in WWE possible Stu Hart died. This book is a great read especially for the price it's labeled. I recommend this to anybody who wants to know what the life of an amazing superstar is like. There will never be another Bret Hart, or anybody coming close to Bret Hart in my book! READ READ READ, you will not be disappointed I promise!

Interesting and insightful

'Hitman...' is an in depth and intriguing autobiography from the man himself, Bret Hart. I have always been a fan of Bret; a guy loaded with natural charisma and arguably one of the best wrestlers to have ever entertained us. This book is quite lengthy: 500+ pages (and the print aint that small!) but this is not a problem at all as I never once grew tired of what I was reading. If you were ever a fan of Bret this is essential. Unlike other wrestler biogs (which are generally rubbish and usually written under the guise of the WWE) this is an honest and at times gritty account of Bret's life from his childhood to his retirement in 2000 and subsequent stroke in 2002. Bret's childhood was tough; part of a very big family with older brothers not afraid to throw their weight around and enduring periods of financial poverty. He then moves to how he started in wrestling under his dad in the Stampede wrestling organisation. This tracks his early friendships with Dynamite Kid and Davey Smith. The next part of the book is the WWF days 1984-1997. All the poignant moments of his WWF are covered. The last part covers his WWF departure, his brothers Owen's death and his miserable WCW run. The strengths of the book are the depictions of Bret's comrades through the years (and the unsavoury figures... ahem, Shawn!). The craziness that went on: drugs, sex, fights... its all in there. Bret travelled a lot during his career visiting all parts of the world. It seeems he enjoyed these times the best. This memoir also provides an intriguing insight into the machinations of wrestling business, ie. booking (and screwing over!). Its amazing just how poor some writing (storylines etc) was even by the big guys WWF. Despite Bret being a 5 time WWF champ he was held back for years (particularly during the 80s) while they promoted Hulk Hogan, who was essentially a crap wrestler. Even when they gave him his deserved run at the top they still screwed him around (eg. Wrestlemania XI: they had Bret fighting Bob Backlund in a low card event... !!! This at the peak of his career!) The Montreal Screwjob is covered in depth as one would expect, but it was only on reading this book that I am now convinced it was a genuine screwjob (I was a bit of a skeptic before, the 'Wrestling With Shadows' docu NOT helping to assuage my doubts. What was also shocking was how poorly he was utilised in WCW. That company (despite beating WWF in ratings from mid '96 to mid '98) were a bunch of idiots who couldn't hold down a balloon if they tried. Aside from the in the ring stories, Bret's difficulties with his siblings are well documented and paint a very sombre and unfortunate picture. Some of his sister appear to be genuinely horrible people and the only really decent one of the bunch was Owen.
Bret is at times a bit presumptious and maybe too expectant in his relations with others, at times he thinks that everyone should consider him first before anyone/thing else. This is his ego leaking through but when you're that talented you can expect and forgive a bit of an inflated ego. In saying that Bret is not a total ego maniac and is at times quite humble too. He also seems to take wrestling a bit too serious, but when you consider he lost his brother and many other friends to the business it does validate his seriousness I guess.
Anyway, enough of my rambling. If you are a fan of Bret, a fan of wrestling or even a fan of biographies, pick up this book as you wont be disappointed. It is well written and articulate, (particularly for a wrestler!) and is intersting the whole way through.

A Real Pro Wrestling Hero

I was amazed at the honesty of this book. Bret's accounts of his layered history is VERY detailed but never to the point of becoming tedious. No words are wasted and the book really reads like Bret's sitting next to you giving you a talented reporter's account of the facts. Sometimes it seemed almost depressing as much as the ups of his life are included, there seemed to be so many more downs; a rocky marriage, an outstanding champion in his profession that was never given the chance to really shine, a very large family filled with little green monsters that harbored resentment towards Bret's success, etc.
I'm glad I own this book. It does sometimes come off a bit too "everything and everyone was against me" which gives the tome a bit of a downward spiral feel. That's why I'm only giving it a rating of 4 stars, but the stuff about what really happened at the Montreal Screwjob and what Shawn "The Real Weasel In Wrestling" Michaels is made of seemed dead on honest and accurate. All in all, a great book for any fan of Bret's, or of pro wrestling.
