Yahya Birt is the editor of the Muslim World Book Review. Aftab Ahmad Malik is a research fellow at the Centre for the Study of Ethnicity and Culure at the University of Birmingham and editor of With God on Our Side: Politics and Theology of the War on Terrorism. Hamza Yusuf Hanson founded the Zaytuna Institute and Academy, which presents a classical picture of Islam in the West and is dedicated to the revival of traditional study methods and the sciences of Islam. David Dakake is a specialist in comparative religion and Islamic philosophy. He teaches in the religious studies department at George Mason University–Fairfax. Ni Peimin’s book shifts attention from considering Confucius as a theorist to reading him as a guide to the art of living, or to life as an aesthetic endeavor. Confucius is masterfully constructed as an interrelated whole, while at the same time, parts can be selected for discussion or a short read, without a need to link them to other parts. The sections are accurate in their biographical and historical details, while teaching that art of living. In both music and society, harmony works longer if it is a blend of differing voices than if it is the conformity of all instruments or voices sounding (thinking) the same. There is harmony in variety. In the section on secular immortality, Confucius and Ni ask us to consider one kind of immortality as the lasting impact of virtuous exemplars, whom they describe, on their communities and larger social groups. Throughout the book there are insightful comparisons with relevant Western figures. For example, the goal of the Jesuit missionary Matteo Ricci (1552-1610) was to learn “What should I believe is true?” The Confucian goal was to learn “how to live one’s life in this world.” (Donald Munro, University of Michigan)

In this remarkable book, Peimin Ni presents a systematic interpretation of Confucius from a gongfu perspective and invites readers to appreciate the Confucian ethical life in artistic, rather than theoretical, terms. About the Author
Peimin Ni is professor of philosophy at Grand Valley State University and visiting professor at the University of Hawaii and the University of Hong Kong. He is author of many works on Confucianism, including On Confucius (2002), Confucius, Making the Way Great (2010), and chapters on “Confucius” and “The Philosophy of Confucius” in the Oxford Handbook of World Philosophy (2011) and the Dao Companion to Classical Confucian Philosophy (2014), respectively. He is former president of the Society for Asian and Comparative Philosophy (2010-2012) and the Association of Chinese Philosophers in America (1997-1999). He has been a keynote speaker at the UNESCO’s Headquarters in Paris, the European Science Foundation meetings, World Public Forum “Dialogue of Civilizations,” and Nishan Forum on World Civilizations. He is also editor-in-chief of the ACPA (Association of Chinese Philosophers in North America) series of Chinese and Comparative Philosophy.

No matter what level chess player you are you'll appreciate this book. It is perfect, for the most concise well thought out instruction of chess theory there is no reason to look any where else. This book is a 10plus.

a very cheap copy of the original

I have the orginal book, and to say this copy was a disappointment is an understatement. It was purchased as a Xmas gift, and I had to end up searching other suppliers at the last minute to find the a proper copy of the book that has beautiful colour photographs and is an outstanding book to read and view.
This 'copy' was 'I dont know what'. It was a different size to the original, a soft copy as opposed to a hard back, the pictures were tiny copies of the original in black and white (the pictures are an important part of the book as they identify the things he talks about in the book) - well good luck with that! they were extremely poor quality pictures. The text looked as if it was 'large print' for sight impaired people, and the text was often skewiffy, and half meandered onto the next page-or somewhere on another page, making no sense at all. Extremely poor quality copy, and a complete waste of money

Met Uncle Max in China in April of 2011, that's how I heard about the book. Took quite a while to find a copy. It's a good read, tells about the customs & culture of the his people and some of their ancient history. Learned a lot from the book, but I hope to take his tour someday.

An inspiring story for young women

I know nothing about dogs, and even less about Russia, but O'Brien immersed me in the world of the main character. Lara is a young woman who wants to carry on the family tradition of breeding borzoi fit for a tsar, but her father would rather pass the torch to her brother. With the support of her favorite dog, Zar, Lara tries to convince her father that she is his true heir.

I cheered for Lara by the end, and the book is an inspiration for young women who dream of following unexpected life paths. Grown-ups like me will also enjoy it for the settings and the chance to learn something new about the culture of another nation.

Not pleased with this book at all....killing wolves...taping young captured wolves mouths shut to be used to train dogs to kill? A dog that did not fight back had it's throat ripped out.... a children's book?

What a heart-filled story that all will love!

Annemarie O'Brien tells the story of Lara, a young Russian teen who loves dogs and working in the breeding kennel raising borzoi. (Borzoi dogs look like those on the cover of the book. If you don't know anything about this breed you will after you read this story. And you'll forever be a fan.) Lara's wish is to breed dogs worthy of the Tsar, but her father has other plans for her, especially after he learns that she has "visions" of things that happen in the future, events that affect the dogs. When her father makes her promise to keep her "visions" a secret, she doesn't understand. Is her father ashamed of her? Her father encourages her to learn a different trade, but how can she seek a life without dogs? Why can't her father accept that her heart is in the kennel? Shouldn't she trust her visions and accept them as a gift from God?

Children will feel sorry for Lara and relate to the jealousy she feels when her brother is born. But Lara's parents are the type that every child needs and would be happy to have. I loved how Annemarie depicted a strong and loving family, teaching nobility and promise-keeping.

As a writer of young adult fiction, I found this book fascinating and well-written. (I cried a little too, which is always a good sign.) I will encourage young adults, and adults who love dogs, to read this novel. If I hadn't read this book I wouldn't know anything about the borzoi breed. This book will teach young adults about life in Russia in the early 1900's, the customs from that time, breeding dogs, and raising borzoi. They're learn about another country in another time from a girl's perspective without realizing they're being taught. And they'll have fun along the way.

Well done, Annemarie! This is rich in believable Russian culture and well-written with excellent prose.
