Indispensible to anyone interested in Chopin

When I went to university, I devoured almost all books on Chopin from the library. None was nearly as informative. Through his pupils, friends, associates, colleagues, you'll know exactly what the master was like when he played and taught, his stylistic requirements, his temperament and the magic he evoked.
I just can't stress this enough - this is a must-buy! If you still have your doubts, get your hands on a copy and have a browse - what you can learn from it is priceless.

Must have for anyone seriously studying Chopin

To the general public Chopin is famous for his beautiful piano music. However, in his days he also was a renowned piano teacher with some revolutionary ideas (at least for his time) about piano technique. His students included rich, aristocratic ladies (he had to make a living) and some very talented students.

Luckily many of the things Chopin told his students during their lessons have been preserved in various diaries and notes by his students and have now been compiled in this book.

Also, Chopin made a start with a piano method (which he did not complete). This method is also included in this book.

If you are a piano student this book is simply a must-have.

If you are not a pianist, but seriously interested in Chopin's ideas about (his own) music and teaching you also should buy this book.

JJ Eigeldinger wrote more excellent books about Chopin which unfortunately are still only available in French.

What can be better than taking lessons with Chopin? This book is very objective. The sources were his students' letters and the chapters are very well-organised.
The higher the level you are in playing piano/music, the more you get.

About the Author
Jason E. Portnof, DMD, MD is a full time faculty member at the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency program at Beth Israel Medical Center/ Jacobi Medical Center/ Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He is Assistant Professor in the Departments of Dentistry and Otorhinolaryngology, Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Portnof completed his undergraduate education at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, and received his doctorate in dental medicine (DMD) from Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. His medical school training (MD) was completed at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City. He completed a residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery and an internship in general surgery at New York Presbyterian Hospital/ Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he also served as Chief Resident in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Dr. Portnof completed a fellowship in pediatric maxillofacial surgery/ craniomaxillofacial surgery in the Department of Plastic and Maxillofacial Surgery, Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne, Australia.
Tim Leung, DMD, MHSc, MD is a private practice oral and maxillofacial surgeon in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and New York, NY. He is also a faculty member of the oral and maxillofacial surgery residency program at Jacobi Medical Center Department of Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (Bronx, NY). Dr. Leung completed his residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery and an internship in general surgery at New York Presbyterian Hospital/ Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he also served as Chief Resident in oral and maxillofacial surgery. He received an MD degree from Weill Cornell Medical College, and a DMD from University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. He earned a MHSc from the University of Toronto. His undergraduate education (BA) was completed at Cornell University.
Melvyn S. Yeoh, DMD, MD is Chief Resident in oral and maxillofacial surgery at New York Presbyterian Hospital, Cornell Medical Center. He completed an internship in general surgery at New York Presbyterian Hospital/ Weill Cornell Medical Center. Dr. Yeoh earned his dental degree from the University of Pennsylvania and his medical degree from Cornell University. I'm certain a 3rd grader wrote this

I bought this book to study for my part two boards along with the dental decks, and the Mosby's review. I made it through the other two study materials without finding any errors and it really helped me study. I didn't make it far until I started noting errors in this book. The answer described would imply B is the correct answer but the answer page said it was C, misspellings, questions that really don't matter, and then I got to page 27 and found the following sentence.
"After being presented with many treatment options including rockets power dancers (RPD)... etc."
SERIOUSLY?!?! RPD stands for rockets power dancers? I threw this book at the wall and went back to studying old released questions that might actually help me. That's right, I made it through 10% of this book before realizing how terrible this book is and I'm kind of embarrassed it took me that long. Do NOT waste your money on this book. You are better off using this money to pay a 5th grader to tell you what is on the test than to waste time reading this.

This is a very bad Q and A book. The questions are way to easy. I mean so easy you dont need to review anyting to get most of these questions correct. The real board is nothing like this. I am licensed in Canada, USA, and Mexico and I have taken all their exams and the questions in this book are no where near the real questions. Its like the wrote this book for dental assistants or something. There are better review material out there, and your best bet is to get old released exams from the ADA. If there is a specific topic that you are really having issues with then get Q and A book on that topic. Those books exist but may be diificult to find but not impossible, you just have to search abroad. This book will not help. The questions are too easy and if you can finish the book in one day with out having reviewed any topics and get a majoroty of the questions correct.

Useless. Not Reflective of Test.

I used as many materials as I could get my hands on to study for NBDE Part II. This was by far the worst. The questions in this review are completely out of touch with anything that you will see on the exam. In this book you will see the authors' bizzarre obsessions with hobby topics that are not really emphasized in dental education or NBDE II. In some cases, the questions or explanations are plain wrong. I would not recommend this book in its current edition.

The spark that ignited the world

Having gone through almost the entire scouting program (from cub scouts, boy scouts, venture scouts, order of the arrow, and on to my eagle scout rank, philmont, national jamboree, and woodbadge leader training WE3-27-00) I never heard the whole story of Lord Baden-Powell. While attending woodbadge I was told of this book that was written by William Hillcourt (a.k.a. green bar bill)with the help of Olave, Lady Baden-Powell(his wife also founder of the girl scouts)and His mother. Green bar bill (Gbb) also wrote from knowing Lord Baden-Powell (B-P) and B-P own writting from his pamphlets, books, and notes. So in using first hand knowledge it was not weighed down with the fog that contimporary writers will place on their own books. I found it to be very delightful to read. B-P is the only person that I know of to be a true ledgend in his own time. B-P was not only a scouter but a spy, a british general, a writer,an artist among other things. He also knew famous people like Cecil Rhodes and Winston Churchill before their own fame. B-P really did live more than one life and he is certainly a hero.

An inspring read for Scouters and non-Scouters alike

Who would have thought that a general, who in his time achieved the same stature that Eisenhower did after World War II, would turn his attention when he was in his 50s to a completely new journey - and create a system to engage boys in purposeful fun at a time when so many were being offered only the mean streets of turn-of-the-century industrial England! Having recently returned from a trip to Kenya, where we visited Paxtu, B-P's last home, and his gravesite, we experienced a pilgrimage fulfilled. To see how this great man and his wife (who herself led the worldwide Girl Scout movement) lived in such simple, humble accommodations there, surrounded by their version of wealth - nature - provides a stark contrast to our end-of-the-century obsession with material wealth. This is about as good a read as it gets - whether you're involved in Scouting or not. I've used it as a gift for members of my Wood Badge patrol. The purchase price is worth every cent. Enjoy!

Scouting at its finest!

This is just an incredible book. I got my first copy at a Wood Badge Course and was told it was out of print. I was so pleased to see that Amazon had found a source for it because I use this book as a gift for all Eagle Scouts in my troop.
Two Lives of a Hero is a great read, the first time I had it I was not able to put it down and finished it after 12 hours of straight reading.
Robert Baden-Powell was an extroridnary man who has had a greater impact on the 20th Century than perhaps any other military figure in history.
I highly recommend this book to any Scout Leader or youth. In this day when we have lost all of our heros this is a book that restores faith.
