Redemption began in 1986, when the distinguished Mexican novelist Carlos Fuentes, in his foreword to a new (albeit flawed) edition of Smollett's translation, declared it to be "the authentic vernacular version" of Don Quixote in English. Fuentes's opinion was in accord with that of the preeminent Cervantist, Francisco Rodríguez Marín, who decades earlier had declared Smollett's Don Quixote to be his preferred English version.

Martin C. Battestin's introduction discusses the composition, publication, and controversial reception of Smollett's Don Quixote. Battestin's notes identify Smollett's sources in his "Life of Cervantes" and in his commentary, provide cross-references to his other works, and illustrate Smollett's originality or dependence on previous translations. Also included is a complete textual apparatus, a glossary of unfamiliar terms, and an appendix comparing a selection of Francis Hayman's original illustrations with the engraved renderings used in the book.

He has written widely on seventeenth- and eighteenth-century British literature, bibliography, and textual criticism.

A literary classic, Smollet's translation is delightful to read, though the book could use better introductory and critical essays. The glossing is primarily to other sources and not explanatory. Not a good student edition, but a good edition for someone who knows the text already.

It is widely said that our utmost abilities, mental and physical, surface in extreme conditions. By definition, war is an extreme condition predicament. Let alone war in the frozen lands of the Russian (then Soviet) plains. One man and his will against all odds... The achievement and prevail of human spirit against life's little games.... Makes a man wonder when not to smile, when to complain, what to think as impossible. I guess impossible is just something we just don't want bad enough as Kazantzakis put it... Recommendable to all... Enjoy every page; I know I did...

A little less talk, a lot more action.

I usually do not review books, instead preferring to read the synopsis (synopsii?) already written. However, this book made me nuts and almost made the DNF pile. My main gripe is the constant references to the the hero's former Marine status. I almost - just to prove my point - went back through and counted how many references to being a former Marine, a warrior, or some other needless reference to Marine-dom. My husband was a Marine (I was Navy), we met in A School and I lived next door to the Marine barracks, and I don't think we've said the word Marine as much as the author did in this book. I get that he's tough and hard-core, I don't need reminders every other paragraph. A lot of snappy dialogue, with luke-warm love scenes. And honestly, this may very well be my own issue with the book, especially since I tend to gravitate toward authors like Gena Showalter and Kresley Cole who write about real bad-a$$ guys and there is very little dialogue used to have to convince the reader of that, plus the love scenes are, um, lovelier ;).

Puts a smile on your face!

This is my first book by Cathie Linz. Though the storyline involves some unhappy times, the bulk of this book is just plain fun! It's full of laugh-out-loud moments and witty remarks, along with characters (both lead and secondary) that are charming and entertaining from the first page to the last. It's one of those books that just leaves a smile on your face and to me, that's what makes a worthwhile afternoon of reading!

interesting lighthearted contemporary romance

In Chicago, her fiancé Alan sends Faith West a text message that he is not coming to marry her as she waits at the altar. Rather than weep, the sharp-shooting librarian decides to go on her honeymoon to Positano, Italy by herself.

There she meets Caine Hunter, who gives the Heimlich to some guy trying to impress Faith by choking on a French fry. Caine and Faith share a heated night, but in the morning she checks into her new paramour. He works for her father's rival insuring she does not steal a client from them. However, that is only the shallow segue of what he wants. He believes her father caused his dad to commit suicide after accusing him of embezzlement so he plots to destroy West through his daughter.

Mad, Bad and Blonde is an interesting lighthearted contemporary romance that looks at how far family loyalties should go. Fans will want to know whether the Dark Knight or the kick butt librarian is right about their dads while also wondering how Jane Austen would feel attending games at Wrigley Field writing about the Cubs.

Ann is a director of her own company, Ann Gravells Ltd, an educational consultancy based in East Yorkshire. She specialises in teaching, training and quality assurance for the Further Education and Skills Sector.

Core components of the Strategy are to disrupt and disable terrorist networks across the globe, and foster international cooperation in these efforts. Creating a global intolerance of terrorism is central as well.

The 2006 Strategy differs from the 2003 version primarily in that it sets different priorities for the strategic elements designed to achieve its goals. Perhaps most significant of these differences is a major increase in emphasis on democratization as a method of combating terrorism.

Additionally, the 2006 strategy places greater emphasis on denying terrorists sanctuary in underdeveloped, failed, and rogue states. The use of economic and political tools to strengthen nations vulnerable to the spread of terrorist influence appears to receive less emphasis in the 2006 Strategy than in the 2003 version.
Inherent in the National Strategy are a number of issues for Congress. These include (1) democratization as a counterterrorism strategy; (2) the validity of the Strategy’ s assumptions about terrorists; (3) whether the Strategy adequately addresses the situation in Iraq including the U.S. presence there as a catalyst for international terrorism; (4) the Strategy’s effectiveness against rogue states; (5) the degree to which the Strategy addresses threats reflected in recent National Intelligence Estimates; (6) mitigating extremist indoctrination of the young; and (7) the efficacy of public diplomacy. To the degree that the 2006 National Strategy for Combating Terrorism may not adequately address the importance of these and other relevant factors, some adjustment of the strategy and its implementation may be warranted.

Problem "Fake url without audio samples for download" successfully solved

I have to say it is a good book, easy to understand, full with good advices BUT I'm disappointed because there is no any audio file for download on url I found in the book. URL doesn't exist. And such a book really doesn't work well without sound examples. I wrote mail to publisher, I hope they will respond to me. Shame.

With good audio samples attached to book it can be 5 stars...

After e-mail I sent to publisher I received good url for audio files, so I'll do what I promised and change my rating for this book to... 5 STARS!

About the Author

Dr. Robert D. Substandard Transcriptions

This book is not up to pop music industry standard. This is not even a guitar book. These are not the transcriptions with guitar tabulature that would facilitate learning these songs, these are the usual "piano arrangements with vocal line" that don't have the actual music that was performed, only chord summaries and general simplifications, etc., for three-finger piano playing (seldom more than four fingers distributed between two hands are required). As much as Tom Scholz supposedly cares about his music, you'd think he'd get the real thing out there; then maybe there'd be more performances of his music. What's missing are, among other things:

1) Retuning (scordatura) schemes, with and without capos, such as used for example on "Peace of Mind."
2) Any hint of the actual guitar solos; the notes represented are just easy-piano versions of these, and are not even close to the real things. And the signature Boston parallel-thirds dual guitar writing is far from faithfully represented; sixths are used just as often, leaving you with the same amount of grunt work if you want to find the real sounds.
3) Tabulature for same; in fact, again, there is no tabulature whatsoever.

If you want to get the songs out and play some first position chords while you screech to yourself, playing one level, but not more than one level, above "air guitar," letting your long hair fall forward dramatically over your guitar, 'cept when you sweep it up really cool and dramatically, while you rock out, feel it, and achieve inner space, unable to detect that you don't sound one whit like Boston, then, buy this book. But if you want to actually play Boston, this is one time you'd better "worry 'bout what you [are] missing."

Very thorough and takes you step by step. It also gives you different viewing options depending on what your comfortable with. I really like the DVD and I'm pleased I purchased it.
