About the Author

Uta von Debschitz was born in 1964 and studied architecture in Berlin. After several years of practicing architecture she decided to become a freelance author in 2002 and has focused on culture and health in her work. Together with Thilo von Debschitz she won the "Deutscher Fotobuchpreis 2009" for her work as an editor.

Thilo von Debschitz was born in 1966 and studied communication design in Wiesbaden. He founded his design studio in Wiesbaden. His main focus is developing high quality print and online media. Together with Uta von Debschitz he won the "Deutscher Fotobuchpreis 2009" for his work as an editor.

Uta von Debschitz, geb. 1964, studierte Architektur in Berlin. Nach einigen Jahren Praxis als Architektin entschloss sie sich 2002 als freie Autorin mit den Schwerpunkt Kultur und Gesundheit tÃ¤tig zu werden. Zusammen mit Thilo von Debschitz wurde sie mit dem Preis Deutscher Fotobuchpreis 2009 gewÃ¼rdigt.

Anatomy in sketches

Kahn's book is a rare combination of artistic excellence and deep knowledge in anatomy of the human body. Kahn lucidly renders the functions of the human organs, representing in pure, simple sketches how the body operates, incorportating industrial metaphors for demonstrating what we all know, but for irrational reasons tend to ignore. The book is recommended to anatomy professionals, to artists and to students of medicine.

Fantastic.

I do not own this book, but I used a library copy to write and provide plates for a research paper last year. The examples of Kahn's work are phenomenal and many! Also, it provided an interesting view of this man as artist and scientist rather than either or. It also discusses Kahn's creativity as well as technical weakness in the arts, and expressed an interesting view of his use of artisans to express scientific idea. I would also suggest his 2 volume work "Man & Structure" as an accompaniment to the visuals within this collection.

Great Novella for an awesome series

I would highly recommend you read Façade and Cadence before you start this novella. I think you could read it alone but you would be missing out on so much history and emotions without the first two novels. For those of us who devoured Façade and Cadence, we were left wondering what happen to Jenson and Blue after the dramatic event happened. The authors gave us their story, where they went, how they handled the trauma and where they end up in life.

Blue was unbelievably tortured and left for dead. Trying to recover from that would seem impossible to any normal person, but Blue did heal physically. Mentally took much longer and she ran away from her friends, her life and Jenson, the man who killed for her. You are going to watch as Blue tries to live a life that is safe, with protection, distant from which she used to be and in paralyzing misery. She is without the one who made her feel alive and happy, the man who gave her life meaning.

Jenson tries to move on. Blue left him, after all he had done for her, and she just disappeared. He keeps the band going, writes songs about his soul mate that is missing. Nothing will help him get over the actions he took to seek revenge for Blue. He can’t stop the nightmares, but he doesn’t regret what he did. When the brick wall comes crashing down on him, he is confronted with not only his worst nightmare, but also his wish he dared to dream. What do you do with both despair and hope come crashing in on a person at the same time?

I loved this series, the novella is great as well, but I felt it missed the intensity that the first two books had. I know I shouldn’t expect the same level of action and emotions, but even when we were reading about what Blue actually endured, I felt more distant to the scene than I did in the first two books. Now just because I say this, please don’t assume it isn’t worth the read because it IS. I needed to know what happen to those two after the dust had settled and the other characters went back to their lives. If you are into dark, twisted and intense plots then pick up all three of these books and buckle up for an epic ride into the dark minds of evil monsters and the strong survivors willing to fight back.

holy hell

Ker and Dawn have done it again and do not disappoint. These two incredible and talented authors are a powerful team and work amazing together and keep coming out with 5+ Star Reads!

This is a Novella from the Deception Series and should be read after FaCade and Cadence. A perfect follow up to amazing characters Blue and Jenson and we even get more of Cade and Faye.
It continues on from Cadence and is a page turner and had me hooked and feeling the emotions they were going through and had you fighting and rooting for them both. Then I was all giddy and excited at the end and was cracking up when everyone knew what was going on and Blue thought she was " looking at a security problem " poor guy had a shock...lol

I definitely recommend the Deception series and can't wait for more from these wonderful authors!

What a surprise! Blue & Jensen's story.

If you haven't read Facade & Cadence I beg you to! This series will truly blow you away with it's plot twists and deception. In the previous books we meet Blue & Jensen and get a small glimpse at them and the lengths one goes to for love and revenge.

"We all have demons my dear. It's how you choose to fight them that matters."

Tormented by the acts he's committed and the loss that he feels, Jensen is spiralling out of control. Blue's absence leaves him hollow. Trying to fill the black void inside with any poison he can.

Blue is seeking an end that never came... forgetting about who she used to be is one thing, but forgetting about what she's lost and what was stolen from her is impossible, and tormenting..

The overpowering amount of love Blue and Jensen have for one another is soul crushing. While damaged their story is inspiring. This may be one of my favorite books from D.H. Sidebottom& Ker Dukey. These ladies have such a talent for making you feel... with their ability to create such pain and love it's no surprise that this is yet another five star read. When they work together, the end result, is nothing less than brilliant!

Gr 9 Up—Wealthy, beautiful high school senior Oona Antunes gets good grades, has a loving boyfriend, and hangs with the popular crowd, yet she flees the Winter Formal dance and lays down to die in the Colorado cold. Rescued and revived, she loses some fingers and toes to frostbite and struggles to make sense of the pain behind her suicide attempt. Unfortunately, readers will also struggle, since Oona's distant relationship with her parents, and the envy she engenders in her classmates, seem to be the only sources of conflict in an otherwise smooth life. Told in brooding first person by Oona's disembodied soul (a clunky device that never quite coheres), the rest of the book is a jumble of high school drama, Oona's physical and psychological recovery, and intergenerational tragedy. A big reveal about Oona's father near the end of the book comes across as far-fetched rather than providing insight into the family dynamic. The self-consciously literary writing is heavy on metaphor and cliché, sapping Oona's story of emotional immediacy. Furthermore, Latino and Native American characters play stereotypical roles in helping European-American Oona to heal. For example, a Navajo teen gives Oona an eagle feather to acknowledge her strength. Much better books about teen mental illness and suicide exist: try Ned Vizzini's It's Kind of a Funny Story (Hyperion, 2006), Meg Rosoff's How I Live Now (Random, 2004), Jay Asher's 13 Reasons Why (Penguin, 2007), or Leila Sales's This Song Will Save Your Life (Farrar, 2013) instead.—Sarah Stone, San Francisco Public Library

Heather Sappenfield (Vail, CO) received an MFA from Pacific University. She has written for The Writer's Chronicle, Mountain Flyer Magazine, and Mountain House and Home. Her fiction has appeared in Meridian, Shenandoah, Limestone, and Tampa Review. She has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize and has been a finalist for the Serena McDonald Kennedy Award, the St. Lawrence Book Award, the Doris Bakwin Prize, and the Flannery O'Connor Award.

Raw and honest journey of self-discovery.

Oona Antunes hated her mom demanding life be perfect, and missed the father who was always away on business. Fascinated with water, as it reflected her own disappearing and despairing life, she kept a journal detailing water facts.

In the middle of a winter dance Oona split herself into two different people. The new “spirit self” became the narrator and, through her eyes, readers saw Oona leave the dance to freeze to death on a mountain trail.

When Oona awoke in the hospital, it was to the realization she had died for almost 20 minutes and had lost several fingers and toes, as well as part of her nose and cheek, to frostbite. While healing she realized the pain her attempted suicide had cost others, and attempted to set things right with them and with herself by Living with a capital “L.”

Part of her healing came about when she accompanied the school’s guidance counselor to a Native American School where she realized everyone’s sense of family and identity was something she wanted. Oona was sure her distant and unemotional father held the key to her family’s happiness, feeling she could help him to Live, but would soon find she had undertaken a task far greater than she had expected.

Through “The view from who I was” Seppenfield takes a look at suicide and its effects on those left behind. Oona’s raw and honest journey of self-discovery will resound with her readers.

Recommended for ages 14 and older.

I met Heather in Seaside, OR January 17, 2015. It was a very brief encounter. My husband and I were on our way to a meeting. Heather gave me a bracelet with the title of her book, "The View From Who I Was" which led me to curiously look into her book. A Great Beginners Guide

Wow, I wish they had a book like this when I started fish keeping. I think there would be fewer fish in heaven if I had a book this informative. From tank choice to maintenance, the 12 weeks this book covers is jam packed with practical information. This book includes helpful information on plants, filters, fish choice, fish diseases and much more. The step-by-step photos are great and extremely easy to follow. The information is timeless and very well done.

This is a great gift for anyone who has or wants to get a fish tank.

THE best general freshwater aquarium reference I've read.

This is a great and complete reference for the beginning to experienced aquarist. Excellent photos demonstrate what the text explains. The author not only introduces the more difficult technical procedures for keeping an aquarium, but clearly explains how to implement them and the natural processes they affect. I also particularly enjoyed that the author frequently discusses the latest innovations and equipment for the home aquarium. If there was one book for the aquarist that I would recommend, it would be this one.

Great book! Perfect for the beginner.

After a ten year break I decided to get back into aquarium keeping. I knew the basics but I was a little rusty on all the details. This book was a perfect refresher course on all of the intricacies of keeping a tropical aquarium - and I learnt a ton of new stuff too. I am setting up a 10 gallon quarantine tank (in my office) and a 29 gallon display tank (in the living room). I have followed this book page by page and a few weeks later my tanks are ready to accept fish - yes, I'm going shopping this weekend!

The author covers every aspect of setting up a new tank. Filters, lighting, substrate, food, you name it - it's all here. The explanation about the critical subject of water chemistry is the best I've read anywhere. There's also a ton of info about plants if you want to get into that side of things. He then goes on to recommend the most appropriate kinds of fish for each stage in the development of your new aquarium - all great information from someone who clearly knows what he's talking about.

The book itself is full color, with lots of graphs and charts to hold your interest. The photographs are excellent.

So, all in all, a great reference for the beginner. Highly recommended. Glad I bought it.

Original and Interesting

Essence by Mandi Lynn is a YA paranormal novel, set primarily in the White Mountains National Forest, New Hampshire, but that's not where the novel's protagonist would like to be. Amelia Clarice Barton, who goes by the nickname Emma, prefers the warmth and sunshine of Florida to the rainy wilderness of NH. But not only because of the weather--strange things have been happening to Emma since her family moved to New Hampshire, miles away from their nearest neighbors and right next to a national park. Emma feels drawn to something in the forest, but not with a feeling of longing, but rather, she physically loses control of her body and senses, hears voices in her head, and finds herself traveling against her will deep into the forest. Too afraid to tell anyone what's happening, Emma keeps it from her parents. But when she begins her new school and encounters a strange girl named Eliza, things only continue down this path of oddity, as something distant yet familiar beckons Emma to the forest, something that will change her existence forever.

The intro of the novel introduces the paranormal element to the reader right away, and leaves him or her curious as to where this happening will lead. The book takes a step back from this, though, as it follows the family's move to a new place and Emma's adjustment to a new school with new friends and an odd stranger named Eliza whose gaze makes her feel uncomfortable--rather reminiscent of the opening chapters of Stephanie Meyers' Twilight.

Things change pace, however, when Eliza's life becomes connected to Emma's struggles with being drawn into the world. The two become friends in an unfortunate event and their shared misfortune.

Essence does several things right, from the strong intro, the exploration of relationships between characters (the one between mother and daughter being the most poignant), an interesting cast of supporting characters, and a satisfying conclusion. There were several memorable scenes with excellent description and thought-provoking musings from characters who'd been through interesting and unfortunate circumstances, and the emotion explored through these kinds of scenes were genuine and touching.

The first narrator suffers from a bit of over-knowledgeable syndrome, speaking a few times from a place of authority more fitting to a third-person omniscient narrator, but regarding the feelings and motives of other characters rather than overarching plot twists (which is what Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games did wrong; the kind of over-knowledgeable narrator in Essence is easier to overlook).

There was some over-writing and wordy descriptions that could have been edited out or cleaned up. While much of the explanation of the paranormal elements was interesting, some of it seemed to be a little too conveniently explained. The middle of the novel was a lot of meandering around minor plot elements, and as a reader I found myself wondering where the novel was going, and if it was going any set place at all. It did come together in the end, though, and the conclusion of the novel left me smiling.

Promising start

I bought this book because I have gotten a lot of value from watching the authors youtube channel, which documents the young authors progress to write and publish her first novel.

Her writing style seems perfectly fine to me, but where this book left me bored was the need for conflict. I often would finish a chapter and have no urge to read the next. Through much of the middle I got lost because there didn't seem to be a clearly defined goal.

That's not to say I didn't like the idea. I was fascinated with that, it's only too bad the group she was with was so uninteresting.

I do suspect Mandi will write more and greater books because the dedication I witnessed on her channel is inspiring.

A new favorite of mine

An amazing book by an inspiring author. This book gave me new insight on what to appreciate like the simple feeling of crying or rain. She developed amazing characters, and there was so much emotion, you could feel it. It was fresh, creative, and original. I am recommending it to every one of my friends! A must read for anyone who is looking for something new with a creative fantasy twist.

Relevancy between how teachers feel they perform their jobs / perceived confidence they can perform their job well...

Dr. Kentina Smith has done an amazing job researching what drives middle school teachers’ levels of confidence in an eastern USA state. Through this study that dives into the profession, and interaction with teachers and para-educators, she details how training, experience, and instructional strategies provide relevancy on how teachers feel they perform their jobs, as well as their own feelings of perceived confidence they can perform their job well. Dr. Smith focused on inclusion classrooms and teachers in the study, to showcase the diversity of teacher efficacy not only between general and special education teachers, but also para-educators that work with children with learning disabilities.

If the reader is in academics, and working in public, middle school environments, this research study will open your eyes to the conscious and subconscious levels of personal feelings of adequacy and confidence as a teacher or para-educator. Using the author’s findings and conclusions, one can pursue other avenues of research, discover or find options for training and development to increase confidence, self-efficacy, and professionalism in the classroom.
