Outstanding book on how to deal with a systemic fungal infection. Thank you so much for writing this book as I do not have access to qualified medical professionals. This has been a lifesaver and am looking forward to the next book.

Update 7/4/16 This book saved my dog's life. She had cancer caused by a fungal infection. After battling this for over 3 yrs, I was ready to give up. When I got her PH up to 7 the food allergies disappeared. All signs of inflammation gone. Every lump, swelling, etc. gone! If you have cancer buy this book. And if you don't think this is you--you better read it again.

A Tutorial on Military Strategy

Paul Kennedy, Professor of History at Yale University, wrote "The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers" and other commentaries. This book analyzes how WW II was won by overcoming problems. The title refers to those who managed an enterprise. This covers the time from January 1943 (the invasion of North Africa) to July 1944 (the invasion of France). Kennedy lists five tasks needed to win the war by chapter. I think this book would be better if it had fewer pages. Too many statistics at times. It provides a history in one book. The `Bibliography' lists the sources.

1) How to Get Convoys Safely Across the Atlantic.
The cure in the Great War was to form a convoy of many ships guarded by destroyers and other ships to prevent the sinking of merchantmen by enemy battleships and U-boats. In WW II merchantmen were being sunk while in a convoy. Operations Research found that a larger number of merchantmen would be more efficient (p.25). Escort carriers allowed airplanes to accompany the convoys (p.50). Long-range B-24 bombers also made a difference (p.53). Better depth charge fuses and an acoustic homing torpedo destroyed enemy submarines. High Frequency Detection Finder could locate surfaced U-boats. Leigh Lights showed where U-boats were at night. Reading enciphered messages was another advantage, but victory went to the side with the more powerful weapons (p.63). New tactics were used (p.67). Attacks on fueling U-boats had effects (p.69). U-boats ("iron coffins") had terrible loss rates (p.71).

2) How to Win Command of the Air.
Strategic bombing meant prioritizing targets: ball-bearing and fighter factories. There were high losses for unescorted bombers and their trained crews (p.76). There were many new developments in the decades before WW II (p.78). Long-range bombers would damage the enemy's capacity to fight (p.79). Aircraft production increased, the limitation was on skilled pilots (p.97). The US bombed in daylight the fighter factories and railroad marshaling yards (p.109). There was conflict over competing fighters (p.123). The P-51 Mustang (with drop tanks) allowed protection of the bombers, and their bombing reduced German military strength (shortage of fuel, damaged railroads). Strategic bombing usually missed its target (p.138). Air power worked best when joined with the army and navy (p.139). Aerial reconnaissance was the most valuable data source. Incendiary bombs killed vast numbers of Japanese.

3) How to Stop a Blitzkrieg.
Lightning war doesn't work is certain geographies, such as mountain ranges, desert, and dense jungles (p.152) or against a stronger force (p.156). Cheaply produced land mines stopped or slowed armored attacks (p.162). The Soviet T-34 was "the greatest tank" of WW II (p.184). Defensive minefields prevented lightning armored strikes (p.193). Anti-tank guns destroyed attacking tanks (p.194). Partisan guerrilla groups sabotaged rail lines and bridges (p.199). The war in the West was not won by any particular weapon (p.212).

4) How to Seize an Enemy-Held Shore.
Kennedy discusses past invasions. Royal Marine commando units carried out raids on the coast so vast numbers of enemy troops were stationed along the coast (p.217). A safe harbor is a necessity (p.218). Airpower was needed to control the shoreline (p.226). Deception was used to split enemy forces (p.256). These pages tell about the efforts in preparation for the invasion and its operation. Amphibious operations were studied since the 1920s (p.281). Amphibious operations required many special ingredients (p.282).

5) How to Defeat the "Tyranny of Distance".
Japanese modernization in the late 19th century led to industrialization, modern armed forces, and the need for food and raw materials (p.284). Their militarists invaded China and then French Indo-China (p.287). Freezing all Japanese commercial assets was followed by war (p.289). There was rivalry between the Japanese Army and the Navy (p.291). The jingle terrain was more dangerous than the enemy (p.300). Japan's Army was spread out (p.303). Hawaii was the forward base to control the Central Pacific (p.304). The US Marines studied amphibious operations (p.308). US submarines played an important role in intelligence and sinking ships (p.334). Taking the Mariana Islands in 1944 was the most significant action to defeat Japan (p.349).

Conclusion: Problem Solving in History.
The diaries of Field Marshal Lord Alanbrooke tell what happened at the top. Kennedy asked it new devices, organizations, or new weapons really worked in winning (p.357). About the Author
Professor Daniel Muijs is Chair of Education. Previously he worked at the University of Manchester as Chair of Pedagogy and Teacher Development at the University of Manchester, School of Education, as Chair of School Leadership and Management at the University of Newcastle and as senior at Warwick Institute of Education. He is an acknowledged expert in the field of Educational and Teacher Effectiveness and is co-editor of the journal ‘School Effectiveness and School Improvement’. He has published widely in the areas of educational effectiveness, leadership and research methods, and has conducted research for government agencies (DCSF, NCSL, QCA), Charitable Trusts (Gatsby) and Research Councils (ESRC).

Are public perceptions of risk simply the sum of individual reactions to individual events, or do social and cultural influences play a role in shaping our definitions of safety, acceptable risk, and danger?

Prompted by public outcries and by the confusion and uncertainty surrounding risk management policy, social scientists have begun to address themselves to the issue of risk perception. But as anthropologist Mary Douglas points out, they have been singularly reluctant to examine the cultural bases of risk perception, preferring to concentrate on the individual perceiver making individual choices. This approach leaves unexamined a number of crucial social factors—our concepts of what is “natural” or “artificial,” for example; our beliefs about fairness, and our moral judgements about the kind of society in which we want to live.

This provocative and path-breaking report seeks to open a sociological approach to risk perception that has so far been systematically neglected. Describing first some exceptions to the general neglect of culture, Douglas builds on these clues and on her own broad anthropological perspective to make a compelling case for focusing on social factors in risk perception. She offers a challenge and a promising new agenda to all who study perceptions of risk and, by extension, to those who study human cognition and choice as well.

Not quite Hemingway but...

Flynn's second effort, SHOWDOWN, comes nearly 10 years and a lot of tough times after BEAM ENDS. While the book could have used a hard-nosed rewrite (there are some heavy-duty themes one wishes he'd developed more), it's still a fun read. Flynn tells the story of Seamus O'Thames, a young boat captain recovering from injuries and illness, haunted by a lost love and talked into taking an interesting mix of people up the New Guinea coast. Overall, it's a romantic tale, but there's a slightly disturbing bitterness throughout as well. Watch for Errol's comments about hero Seamus O'Thames' mother, and how the relationship between Seamus and Cleo develops. There's an obnoxious parrot named "Hedda" (as in "Hopper" the 40s gossip columnist)and a bratty child star. As with his first effort, BEAM ENDS, there's a lot of promise here, although the demons are beginning to close in on him. Had Flynn been slightly more disciplined and temperate, this novel might have succeeded critically. But never mind that now; put the Jimmy Buffet on, grab a cold brew and enjoy. Flynn's a great story teller and this book is worth a sunny afternoon's effort.

Flynn as fascinating to read as he was to watch on the screen!!!

Errol Flynn's life was as fascinating off screen as it was on. He was truly a unique persona, with a wide variety of special talents that were often overlooked or underestimated. I believe he was tremendously underrated as an actor and unhappily pegged into the action hero role for most of his acting life. Perhaps this came naturaly to the studio since Flynn seemed to be a true-life action hero. I find it sad that he was not allowed the opportunity to do more comedy, since he was very good at it and had a natural wit that came through on the screen as well as in the books he wrote. You'll find plenty of it in this book. Though one can see some common threads in the characters and some of the stories in this book and the ones in Flynn's autobiography "My Wicked, Wicked Ways," the characters and story lines here are fully, clearly and colorfully developed. Flynn definitely had a distinct talent as a writer. His powers of description are more than enough to make you feel that you are there with these characters and able to take an adventorous trip to places and experiences that most of us, unlike Flynn, will never be able to experience ourselves.

I would highly recommend this book, as well as Flynn's autobiography, for anyone with even a mild interest in Flynn himself, or anyone who just has a taste for a good, exciting, well fleshed-out adventure story.

Showdown - You'll Want to Read It Again

While the title seems made for a trite western film, this book could be nothing farther from that and is instead a happy surprise for the reader. It is very entertaining and well written. The characters are well-developed and nothing short of colorful. They seem to jump from the pages, while the descriptions of the geography and environment, sailing mishaps and local cultures provide a tactile picture for the audience. The author does a fine job conveying the varied emotions of the characters, especially those of Captain O'Thames from childhood through adulthood. There is plenty of action in the book and the plot and subplots move along well. This is a book that the reader will want to read again "in case the reader has missed something," and a second reading is just as much fun. This is a solid follow-up to Beam Ends, the author's first endeavor. It is sad that the author gave up writing extended pieces so early when he clearly has the talent and that talent would have been honed with more serious and dedicated production.
