There are dozens of excellent books on C++ and object-oriented programming, but very few of them put the language into the perspective of scientific computing. The introductory part of the present book acts as a language introduction, while the main contents focus on how C++ can be used to implement numerical algorithms. Yair Shapira is engaged in research in the Computer Science Department, Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa, Israel. His main research interests are multigrid, preconditioning, and numerical methods. He is author of the books Matrix-Based Multigrid: Theory and Applications, Second Edition (Springer, 2008) and Mathematical Objects in C++: Computational Tools in a Unified Object-Oriented Approach (CRC, 2009).

Frustrating

Whilst I'm no mathematician (rather, an engineer turned software developer), and so whilst I can't comment on the mathematical aspects presented, I didn't appreciate the C++ code in this book. An overview of C++ is given, but it doesn't use the terms that are generally used in a programming book. In addition to these peculiar terms, much of the C++ code is simply bad, and would likely crash sooner or later in the real world.

Good concept poor implementation

As someone else mentioned already this is the only book in its kind and for me this is the only quality it possesses. If it really stood up for what the table of contents promises then it would be the perfect book but the content lets you down pretty quickly. The C++ language is used in a style that if you don't use other references there is no way to be able to understand C++ code written in the real world. Except for using the oo structures of the language everything else is in C style. But lets say you want to start with this book since it focuses on applications to pde and then perhaps move on to a more advanced reference for C++; then the book turns out to be too descriptive giving only a feeling of what's involved. There is no need to mention that no book can teach you the math for pde, however you won't learn C++ as well. The only thing you can expect, again as an other reviewer mentioned, is to run into some slick ideas about how to exploit oo concepts for meshes and adaptive refinement.

Excellent for C/C++ Programmers who need this type of Math, but ...

The book does give a good introduction to C/C++ if that is what you need. If you already are an expert at C/C++, this book is excellent introduction for applying PDE's with C/C++, though I could have asked for more examples.

I bought the book to help me write better PDE's in my work with Image Processing, Fuzzy Logic, Neural Networks. The Author does explain thing in a very concise way, but be prepared to do research and work through the exercises.

However, there is some noticable code in the book that just does not work, but can be easily corrected. There is also some misinformation with the STL library and it's capabities. This can be a problem for those not well versed in the STL. Also some of the functionality is not as effiecent or well written as he claims to be. This is especially true the operator overloads, but it not bad.

Otherwise I would have given it a five star.

Before Sanderson was great

This is not a good book. The characters are cliches, the plot is horrible, and the prose is clunky. That said you can see the brilliance of Sanderson shining through in the detailed world building and attention to detail that makes him great in his later works. Go pick up a Mistborn novel or The Way of Kings and see the master at the peak of his craft. Maybe it takes an Elantris to get there.

Strong Moral Fiber + Handful of Corn Meal = Difficult to Swallow

Am a big fan of Cosmere novels; but, this one left me feeling weird. Perhaps, the target audience is Young Adult - sorry if I missed that. So, a 30 year old virgin falls in love with a hairless chihuahua looking dude and then King Chihuahua has to fight by drawing intricate symbols in the air... symbols that take a good 5 minutes to draw. If that doesn't sound fun - there was a lot of cleaning up slime, reading/eating old books and planting corn. When compared to other Cosmere novels, this was a missed high five... got left hanging a bit here.

Great story and characters!!!

Sanderson's first published book! This 10 year anniversary edition has a great intro by his friend and reading partner, as well as a lot of words from the author at the end. I'm reading it for the second time already because all the threads he weaves through the book take time to understand. I'm very impressed, as always, by the story cohesion and engaging characters.

About the Author
Jodi O'Brien (Ph.D., University of Washington) is Professor of Sociology at Seattle University. She teaches courses in social psychology, sexuality, inequality, and classical and contemporary theory. She writes and lectures on the cultural politics of transgressive identities and communities. Her other books include Everyday Inequalities (Basil Blackwell), Social Prisms: Reflections on Everyday Myths and Paradoxes (Pine Forge Press), and The Production of Reality: Essays and Readings on Social Interaction, Fourth Edition (Pine Forge Press).

David Newman earned his bachelor’s degree from San Diego State University in 1981 and his graduate degrees from the University of Washington in Seattle (M.A. 1984, PhD 1988). After a year at the University of Connecticut, David came to DePauw in the fall of 1989 and has been here ever since. David teaches courses in Deviance, Mental Illness, Family, Social Psychology, and Research Methods. He has published numerous articles on teaching and has presented several research papers on the intersection of gender and power in intimate relationships. Recently most of his scholarly activity has been devoted to writing and revising several books, including Sociology: Exploring the Architecture of Everyday Life (SAGE ©2010); Identities and Inequalities : Exploring the Intersections of Race, Class, Gender, and Sexuality (McGraw-Hill ©2006); and Families: A Sociological Perspective (McGraw-Hill ©2009). He is currently working on a book-length manuscript that examines the cultural meaning, institutional importance, and everyday experience of “second chances.”

Needs an editor!

I love the great questions but SO MANY ANSWER ERRORS! Especially in the opthal/oto section. Such a shame this wasn't edited well because the questions are spot on and informative. I still find it useful for question practice but be sure you read the answers. Often the letter for the answer is wrong.

Disappointed.

When I received this book, I opened it to a random page and picked a question. The explanation/answer was not correct, as mentioned in previous posts. I used a previous edition of this book to study for my initial certification several years ago and noticed an error or two, but this edition is much worse. What a shame.
