Very nice!

I bought this book based on the description and preview alone and I'm quite pleased with it. There are several variations of beaded beads all designed to go on the twisted herringbone rope as pictured on the cover, or on purchased necklace. The diagrams are large and clear and easy to follow. The author includes instructions on making the rope as well as basic stitch instructions needed for the beads. I've recommended this book to several people.

I've already started my collection of memories with the great projects in this book. Liz did a book signing for my beading group and wore the signature necklace. It is SO stunning. I can't wait until mine is completed. The projects are quick, well diagrammed and easy to do. Be careful though, as they are very addicting.

They make nice gifts for every member of the family, including the guys, as tokens for their key chains or dangles for the rearview mirror.

Thanks Liz for another fantastic beading book.

Beautiful Beading Book

This book is wonderfully illustrated, easy to follow, and I would recommend this for most beaders. It has step by step instructions on how to make the neck chain, and each of the beaded circles and starfish. Someone else in a beading class recommended this book, and it a great addition to my collection. So, after the holidays are over I will start working on my own personalized necklace!

Old fluff put in an entertaining format.

Guy Kawasaki is a genuinely warm, engaging, intelligent and articulate man. I've had the pleasure of meeting him several times at MacWorld trade shows.

However, Guy Kawasaki is a career self-promoter. He has made a living for many years repackaging standard business advice in an entertaining format and peddling it as new to the legions of people seeking a business success formula.

More power to Guy for making a living at it, but it doesn't alter the nature of what is between the covers here: old advice, with a lot of it being nothing more than commensense.

Two irritating things about Guy's otherwise excellent writing style. He has a real problem with gender pronouns. Even in academic writing that tends to be excruciatingly politically correct, I've never seen anyone go to such extremes in using "she", "her" and other feminine pronouns. It's creepy, weird and utterly unnecessary. Certainly She would understand if Guy backed off a bit. Then there is Guy's cuteness with a couple of euphemisms: for example, he takes the common expletive for bull manure and adds "-takke" to it. Once may cute, especially among your 4th grade classmates. A couple of dozen times and it is truly annoying and leads you to believe the author may be a fourth grader.

As for Guy's advice . . . well, there's a reason why so many self-help and business success books are perennial bestsellers: people want guidance and advice And guy provides it in a witty, entertaining manner.

But virtually all of it has been served up hundreds, if not thousands, of times before by other authors. Some of what Guy offers up is pure nonsense without a shred of evidence to support it: it is just politically correct, like his overuse of the feminine. For example, he directs that companies "diversify" in their hiring, implying that if your workforce isn't statistically proportionate, you are doomed to an early end in a "Bozo Explosion". While it may be politically correct, the proposition is not supported by evidence.

Straining for material, Kawasaki resorts to interviews with other authors and academics, not a few of whom are cranks. One parses a conspiracy theory that would give a tinfoil hat wearer a run for their money.

Finally, Kawasaki tries to cover the waterfront with his advice. And the plains. And the mountains too. And the oceans. Everything. If you're looking for millions to start your company, Kawasaki has advice. If you're looking for a job, Kawasaki has advice. If you're the boss of a successful company, Kawasaki has advice.

The quality of the advice in every area, however, is suspect. First, much of it is common sense. If you have to buy as book to learn common sense, you have a problem. A lot of what Guy writes has been written about a zillion times before.

Take, for example, some of his advice about getting a job in Silicon Valley. Show up early, Guy says. "Get to your interview at least thirty minutes early because (a) you might hit traffic . . ." Actually, I think Guy means to say leave for your interview early because you might hit traffic, if She is not watching over you. Point is, who needs to buy a book to learn this? I love this line: "Answer the first question "How are you?" with a great response. For example, a great response is, "I feel great. I'm really anxious to learn more about this job and tell you about myself, so that we can determine if we're a good match". Very impressive: I'm sure the interviewer will be bowled over by your sincerity.

As one of his later chapters, Guy has one entitled "Are You an Egomaniac?" I think Guy is - and he appears to make a good living from it.

On the whole, 'Reality Check" is no worse than then some advice books and perhaps is valuable to simply reassure people that common sense is still a valuable commodity. But for business success tips, Guy doesn't offer anything you haven't seen before. I'd suggest holding off on this one until it is remaindered or just get it from the library.

An Authentic Tretise on the World of Work and Business

Guy Kawasaki is an evangelist. He can't help himself. Thank God.

I, too, was one of the Twitter people who got a preview of the book in digital form and literally laughed out loud -- at the local coffee shop - yeah, I looked stupid. But it was worth it.

I thought it was going to be a short book. At least it seemed that way because I flew through the digital version fairly quickly. So when I saw how big it was (460 pages, 94 Chapters - each one is just a couple pages long - so don't freak out) I thought I'd never get through it. But can I just tell you that it is BY FAR the most entertaining, informative, true-to-life rant on what's good and bad about the world of entrepreneurship, business, presentations - and more.

All the things everyone of us has wanted to say out loud - but has never had he guts is in there. I have so many favorite chapters I don't know where to begin.

Since I have this rule about NOT working with A-holes, I'll start with that one. (That would be Chapter 87, pg. 401) First he describes an A-hole (so you can test to see if you are one), then he goes on to outline some quick and easy strategies of dealing with A-Holes - and so on.

Other favorite chapters are the one's I've themed as "Lies." Throughout the book Guy outlines the Lies different groups tell each other: Lies CEO's tell, Lies Venture Caps Tell, Lies Entrepreneurs tell. These are rants to be sure - but what makes this book so utterly wonderful is that Kawasaki tells you how to avoid them and how to set yourself up for success -- please, for everyone's sake (I can almost hear him say)

In the preview version (I'm not sure where it is in the big book - perhaps it was edited) he basically says that VC's are sick of people asking for money when they haven't already gotten customers (just promises). The quote went something like "Just once I'd love to have someone ask for money so they can expand and grow because they have too many customers and are out of capacity."

See what I mean? The language is so simple. The message so true and so real, that even I can remember something I glanced over MONTHS ago.

To me, that's the sign of a great book.

And now, a confession. I didn't want to like Guy Kawasaki - or his book. I don't go for all this web and book celebrity stuff. Everything is so automated and fake anymore, I guess I'm getting cynical. But Guy Kawasaki practices what he preaches. He connects, he participates and he is good at what he does - and doesn't see why the rest of us can't be good as well.

Like I said Guy Kawasaki is an evangelist -- and a good one too.

Truth, Wisdom and Humor - Guy Kawasaki's Best Book Yet

Rare is the time I pick up a nearly 500 page book on business that's keeps me up reading after everyone in the house has already gone to bed. But, with Reality Check, Guy's hit a home run.

Truth - I've read hundreds of books on entrepreneurship, marketing, careers, yadda, yadda, yadda. Heck, I've even written one of my own (Career Renegade: How to Make a Great Living Doing What You Love). And, you can pretty much tell within the first 20 pages the difference between books written by people who've "studied" entrepreneurship and those written by people who've "lived" it.

The first offer great advice...that works in a vacuum. The latter reveal what it's really all about. They speak the truth, based on what the writer has lived and breathed. As a lifetime entrepreneur and writer, that's the book I want to read. And, that's the book Guy has delivered.

Wisdom - 461 friggin' pages of it...and it's not 300 pages of juicy stuff and 161 pages of self-serving fluff. It's ALL juice! What do I mean by that? It's not about theory. Reality Check delivers you into the conversations, presentations, strategy sessions, critical decisions and actions that nearly every budding entrepreneur wrestles with.

Then, Guy serves up actionable, specific, aggressive do's, don'ts, tips, tasks, strategies and scripts based on real live experience sitting on both sides of the funding table, the boardroom table, the podium...and the plywood garage table.

I stopped taking notes and dog-earing pages when I realized I was doing it on every page!

Style & Humor - If you're looking for dry, professorial, textbook style writing...go away, that's not Guy's style. And thank God for that. Like all of Guy's books, this one is irreverent, edgy and engaging. And, Guy sense humor really comes through in this one, too. Enough to keep a 500 page tome fresh to the end. In fact, the Foreword 2.0, written by Dan Lyons a/k/a Fake Steve Jobs, had me laughing out loud and e-mailing people to strong-arm them into buying the book just to read the intro.

Look, you can keep reading reviews or you can just buy the darn book now. Which you choose will very likely determine whether you're a real entrepreneur...or you just like reading what people who write about them think.

About the Author

Professor Medeni Maskan is currently a professor at the University of Gaziantep, Engineering Faculty, Food Engineering Department. He received a B.Sc. degree in Food Engineering from Middle East Technical University in 1988. He received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Food Engineering from Gaziantep University in 1992 and 1997, respectively. He worked on the storage stability of pistachio nuts at various atmospheric conditions problem during his Ph.D. studies. Dr. Maskan has been a faculty member since 1998, and became a full professor in 2007. He has published more than 70 articles in national and international top class journals. His research program focuses on fats and oils, dehydration of food materials, and extrusion technology. He acts as a reviewer in several journals being published in the food science and technology area. Professor Maskan lives in Gaziantep, Turkey with his wife, Aysun, and their two children, Serhat and Ozan Emre.

Dr. Aylin Altan is an assistant professor of Food Engineering at the University of Mersin, Turkey. Dr. Altan received her B.S. and M.S. degrees in Food Engineering at the University of Gaziantep, Turkey, in 2000 and 2003, respectively. She received her Ph.D. degree in Food Engineering in 2008 from the University of Gaziantep in Turkey, focusing on the extrusion process under a collaborative research with the University of California, Davis. She worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, Davis, from 2009 to 2010. She joined the faculty of Food Engineering at the University of Mersin in 2010. Dr. Altan is the author of 13 research papers in refereed scientific journals, 2 book chapters, and more than 20 conference presentations. She is the recipient of the third-place poster award in the Second International Congress on Food and Nutrition in 2007, best poster award in ICC International Conference in 2008, and a finalist in IFT’s Food Engineering Division Graduate Paper Competition in 2008. She is a member of IFT. Her current research interests include processing of food materials into value-added products, modeling and optimization of food processing, utilization of agricultural processing by-products, and noninvasive imaging of food microstructure.

About the Author

Dave West would like to describe himself as sheik geek. Unfortunately no one else would describe him in that way. They would say he is a professional Englishman who likes to talk about software development best practices with the passion and energy of an evangelical preacher. Recently Dave has moved to Ivar Jacobson Consulting, where he runs the Americas and can combine his desire to talk about software development and spread the word on rugby and football, and argue that cricket is more exciting that baseball. Before running the Americas for Ivar Jacobson Consulting, Dave worked for a number of years at Rational Software (now a part of IBM). Dave held many positions at Rational and then IBM, including Product Manager for RUP where he introduced the idea of process plug-ins and agility to RUP. Dave still laments the days when he use to sit in a cube and write software in the city of London. This is where he believes he cut his teeth writing big insurance systems with nothing but a green screen and a process flow chart.

A nice compilation of heuristics for good OOP design

There are n solutions to a single problem. All of them right in solving the problem however only a few extend the existing system at a 'natural joint' i.e. where it is consistent with the original structure/intent or theory of the developer. Such changes lead to systems that are easy to take-down and reassemble when you hit a dead end.. (along the lines of the Lego Brick metaphor, if you find that a brick doesn't give you the shape you want, you just chuck the brick and plug in a different shape.) This in fact is the bulb moment behind the XP practice of 'Metaphor'. Identifying the right set of objects and the distribution of responsibilities among them to suimulate a real world scenario is the sign of a master object designer. This book will not make you an artist but will give you some good pointers nonetheless.

* The first few chapters help the reader understand between the culture difference between 2 camps of 'scientific logical method-driven designers' and 'heuristics-driven artistic social designers'.
* Chapter 3 outlines the 4 fundamental tenets of object oriented thinking.
* Chapters 4 n 5 throw some light on the terminology and subtle thinking differences.
* Chapter 6,7,8,9 are the 'How-to'/actionable chapters.
* Chapter 10 is just bizarre... disjointed
The book as a whole doesn't exhibit 'flow'... something feels off. The book also doesn't promote lucid language frequenty throwing in important sounding words :)
The book definitely could have been shorter to make a better impact- I liked a bunch of ideas like Object Cubes (an extension to the CRC Card) as a thinking tool (I don't think I'll be building any physical cubes), the 4 presuppositions of object thinking, 'All inheritance must be based on behavior extensions', the little 'Behind The Quotes' sidebars , 'Object as a person' metaphor. Self-evaluating rules, Event Dispatchers and the DataItem type (as opposed to passive data) are interesting. That said it is a refreshing (though opinionated) change to read about the craft behind OOP. 4 out of 5 stars.

Superbly written, profound content

The criticisms of this book using big words are unfounded. OOAD is a complex idea (after you read this book, this will become crystal clear if it isn't already) and therefore needs and incorporates a robust vocabulary to articulate complex processes and ideas. If you are put off by big words, you will not be able to read about science, philosophy, mathematics or programming, all of whose ideas, by the way, are juxtaposed in Object Thinking.
As well, to say this book is "deeply slanted" and that the author "foams at the mouth" reagarding current programming practices is to completely disavow oneself from reality. Take a quick and simple peek and the current state of software design/projects/programs. See anything amiss? How about cost overruns, and projects that either get shelved halfway through, or take 5 times as long to build as planned. Mr. West simply says that true OO is rarely practiced, that there is a better method, and here it is. If anyone has any credible evidence that XP/Agile programming is the same or worse than traditional OO or structured programming practices, be sure to write your own book on it. It will go along ways to disproving theories that Dave West and others put forth.
For those who are open to expanding their current views about programming, get this book. Dave West is, at the least, a gifted writer whose book content is profound, and is a must for any serious computer programmer.
I thought I knew what OO programing was; I was wrong. It has nothing to do with, at its deepest (and true)level, programming or computers. It has everything to with the human condition and how we perceive and process the world around us.
This is a must-have book for anyone who aspires to be, or already is, an OO progammer. Superbly written, with profound content.
This is a no-brainer: buy it.

About the Author
Jürgen M. Meisel is Professor Emeritus of Linguistics in the Department of Romance Languages and a member and former Chair (1999-2006) of the Research Center on Bilingualism at the University of Hamburg. He is also an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Linguistics and Distinguished Fellow in the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Calgary. He is one of the founding editors and current co-editor of the journal Bilingualism: Language and Cognition, published by Cambridge University Press.

Probably as good as possible--without being intrusive

The author well restrained himself from "digging into the painful childhood" that produced such an unusually remote "negator of impulses." He brought out the positive aspects of Johns personality--his ability to laugh at himself and not always to take himself too seriously. "His work is a constant negation of impulses" said the critic..."wouldn't you say so Jasper?" "NO" says Jasper, laughing. Jasper can laugh. That is nice. The author respected his need for privacy in his personal life. He presented a very difficult, complex personality with dignity, humor, and good taste.

Novelists have always loved artists, and artists have always loved novelists. They love and admire the other's talent, but--most important--they are not competitors. Crichton's love of Johns' work certainly comes forth, and Johns' seemed flattered that a best-selling novelist, and not an art professor, wanted to do a book on him. That mutual admiration underlies why this is such a solid book.

Into the heart of creation

I own six books on Jasper Johns (monographs, catalogues of exhibitions) and this one is undoutedly the best. The illustrations are numerous and of a good quality, however this is not your coffee-table type of book: you do want to read the text, which, through numerous interviews and essays, manages to give the best analysis available on the master's art. Especially interesting are the dialogues between Chrichton (himself a collector of Johns's works) and the artist. This is a book that often provides unique insight into the artist's creative process; Chrichton opens many doors and it is up to the reader/art lover to step in and discover Johns's mysterious world.

About the Author
Alan Chalmers was born in Bristol, England and has a BSc in physics from the University of Bristol, an MSc in physics from the University of Manchester and a PhD in History and Philosophy of Science from the University of London. He has taught history and philosophy of science at the University of Sydney since 1971 and is now an Associate Professor there. He is the author of Science and its Fabrication (Open University Press, 1990), as well as the previous two editions of What is this Thing Called Science? and many articles on history and philosophy of science.

Clear, Comprehensive and Friendly

Alan Chalmers's "What is this thing called Science?" is an introduction to the philosophy of science. While Chalmers reaches some of his own conclusions, the book generally digests theories in the philosophy of science with standard criticisms in a very friendly and unimposing manner.
This book is quite comprehensive, covering the nature and justification of scientific theories, theories about scientific progress and the realism/anti-realism debate, among other topics. It progresses chronologically through inductivism, falsificationism, Kuhn, Lakatos, Feyerabend and more contemporary theories.
Chalmers explains and critically evaluates the theories clearly and in some depth. He often illustrates his claims with examples from the history of science. The book is also well organised, and each chapter is concluded with suggestions for further reading.
The third edition of this book is significantly changed from the previous editions, including new chapters on Bayesianism, the new experimentalism, natural laws (I like Boyle's explanation; pity Chalmers dismisses it so quickly) and the realism/anti-realism debate.
"What is this thing called Science?" has remained popular for well over two decades. While there are many new alternatives available, I recommend this book for introductory courses in the philosophy of science and for anyone interested in the subject.

Solid Introduction

This clearly written book is a very good introduction to philosophy of science. Based on the authors considerable experience with teaching this subject, it is aimed at advanced undergraduates and can be read profitably by any interested person. Chalmers point of departure is that philosophy of science is an effort to capture what is distinct and distinctly successful as a way of gaining knowledge. Chalmers begins with an examination of naive ideas of science based on simple empiricism, naive positivism, and induction. He shows these quickly and clearly to be misguided. This leads to a set of chapters investigating the idea that theory is the distinguishing feature of science. Chalmers has a nice set of chapters describing critically the approaches of Popper, Kuhn, and Lakatos, all of which are found to have some strengths. Chalmers is equally good on the defects of these approaches, all of which fail to capture crucial aspects of scientific knowledge and progress. A similar chapter is devoted to Paul Feyerabend's attack on scientific knowledge. Chalmers follows with chapters on other, recent approaches including Bayesian views and the "new experimentalism." The latter does much better at describing progression of scientific knowledge. Chalmers then concludes with chapters on the nature of scientific laws and a sensible discussion of realism versus anti-realism. A consistent feature of this book is use of historical example, particularly from physics, to explore philosophical issues. The bibliography is decent.

Introspection

I disagree with Chalmers. He admits to the reader on page 169 that he believes the philosophy of science, and therefore this book, is of no help to scientists. This claim he supports by stating his book primarily assults our societal ideologies of science (i.e. either an unwavering association of science with truth, or an impenetrable opinion that science is simply a buffet of ideas to freely choose from). I agree with this statement, but I contend such ideologies exist significantly within the scientific community as well. Perhaps Chalmers assumes his writings won't be internalized by the practicing scientist. This assumption may be true, but my evidence of one data point (me) suggests perhaps scientists (especially apprentices like me) can gain from this book.

I recommend this book only to those practicing scientist who have the courage to allow Chalmers' microscope to examine what they believe and how they justify their existance.
