Profound and thorough exposition of embodied philosophy and Cognitive Linguistics

Of the work in embodied philosophy and cognitive linguistics, this by far the most careful, cogent, and through exposition. It is not light reading--it assumes a high level of education and a high degree of familiarity with Western philosophy, but it is profoundly rewarding.

Johnson develops a theory of image schemas as the preconceptual links between our embodied experiences and our sophisticated abilities to use language, including the theory of conceptual metaphor he codeveloped with George Lakoff. He offers many different sources of evidence ranging from gesture to studies of epistemic modality in logic and linguistics to phenomenology to aesthetics and art. The second half of the book largely explores the philosophical, historical, and psychological elaborations of the notion of a schema.

All in all, those searching for an exposition of how the repeated patterns of bodily experience shape cognition will be rewarded. The twenty-odd diagrams of image schematic patters are also highly revealing.

Similarly, academically-minded skeptics who are unconvinced of the rigor and merit of the research programme he outlines with Lakoff in Philosophy in the Flesh should find this satisfying and challenging reading.

The book is not without faults, but largely in the unacknowledged contributions of other strains of thought. For example, Johnson does not explore the relationship between image schemas and Wertheimer's theory of gestalt perception; nor does he acknowledge here any relationship to Merleau-Ponty or the Piagetian tradition of child development; and the Shepard-Metzler mental imagery studies of object rotation are only briefly mentioned. Such ommissions may be more a result stemming from a limited scope, however, as he has acknowledged such thinkers elsewhere.

Chapter Six whose focus is on a theory of imagination and the chapter on meaning make this book a significant contribution to my work. I seek to evoke the soul in its relationship to the world of work. I see Mark Johnson advancing the insights of Jung as well as those of Steiner.

A great reference source for freelancers and bloggers to have handy. I think the Kindle version might be easier for some.

This is a great pocket grammar book to have around. I am a freelance writer/blogger and used this while proofing my last articles. It helped me brush up on a few things I've been overlooking. I found the reminder about how to use compound adjectives very helpful. Personally, I am not always sure when to use the hyphen for certain phrases. In reality, I forgot the rules. You will be very surprised to find out how much you've forgotten once you start using this book. I have the soft cover book and don't mind using it. However, I think the Kindle version might be easier for some to use. Regardless of the version it will come in handy. (I feel like buying some kindle for a few social media posters who need help...) I received this product for free in exchange for my honest and unbiased review. Well, I paid $0.01 for it.

The perfect campanion

This handy book is small and compact and easy to use. Not only does it come with examples of what not to use but what to use properly. It is divided into sections that make sense, are well organized, and includes index and table of contents so you can find what topic you are looking for easily. If anyone has a dictionary and thesaurus on their shelf, this must be included as well. This book is exceptional for all writers, students, and teachers. As a writer myself, this is staying near my keyboard at all times and I would recommend this book to everyone.

great guide

I love writing. It's one of my favorite hobbies. That having been said, there is a slightly less fun part to writing - which is editing and making sure you've used correct grammar. This doesn't always happen with me on things like amazon reviews, but for my more serious work, I really like to make sure I'm writing things correctly. This book has come in so handy for that. It's almost like a guidebook for when I get stuck. There's so much good information in here, and it's all laid out in a way that it's fairly easy to find what you're looking for. I definitely prefer the physical copy of this book to the kindle version because, for me personally, it's much easier to flip around with a physical book rather than a digital copy.

The physical book is really nice quality. It has a nice suede-textured cover and it's a great size - not too small or too large. I'm really pleased with this book and I would definitely recommend it to students or to anyone who enjoys writing. I received this product at a discount in exchange for an honest review.
