Poor Guidebook but a Good Question Collection

I am not blasting this book - I am giving you a rating based on the expectation that the description of this book sets. It does not live up and you are bound to be disappointed. However, it is actually a valuable book but you need to be aware of what you are buying and probably how to use it best when you buy it:

As a pure guidebook - 1 star
As a question collection - 4 stars

What You Will Find Inside:
28 Critical reasoning questions
31 Reading comprehension questions
110 Sentence correction questions
107 Problem solving questions (only 7 of which cover combinations and probability)
37 Data Sufficiency questions

***** CONS *****
* No review of math principles or grammar rules. This book assumes that you have gone through the Kaplan's main GMAT book. If you need help with basics look into getting the Math or Verbal Workbooks before getting this one.
* Illogical structure. Instead of the typical approach of providing a rule and then questions to practice that rule on, this book just lists questions in each of the sections. All of the valuable information and tips are scattered around the explanations section. The book assumes you will read/review explanations for every question. In defense, the main point is often emphasized, so they are not too hard to find.
* Question difficulty. Fewer than 50 people per year score 800 on the GMAT, and most of the lucky guys get past 700. To appeal to a broad audience, Kaplan designed this book at a 650/700-level
* Math section is fairly easy and lacks meaningful practice in advanced subjects such as probability, combinations, or coordinate geometry, statistics. If these are your weak areas, you should look elsewhere
* No Integrated Reasoning

* The book does what it was supposed to do - provide advanced selection of questions, giving the necessary practice with relevant questions. Though Kaplan's questions are not one-for-one official GMAT questions, I found them fairly close overall. I also liked the explanations - they were very detailed
* Good verbal section with valuable RC practice; huge selection of SC's
* Good quality publishing and paper; good layout
* Price - I thought it was worth every penny :)

Bottom Line: This is not a guidebook or a book to start with - if you need to get better in a certain question type, then get it but don't expect it to be sufficient to give you the background often needed to score 700+.

I studied the 800 and Kaplan Premier book and was able to get a 730. They lay the problems out and go into great detail about the answers. Good luck on the GMAT!

GMAT prep strategy

I have been been really busy with work and neither did I have too much time to study for GMATs, nor an extra grand to spend on a prep course. I needed above a 700 and I know from SAT practice that the prep courses are geared for students aiming for the mid 600s as the goal.

At least for me, I used the Princeton Review Cracking the GMAT (2006 edition) as a starter to familiarize myself with the test.

I think the 10th edition official guide by GMAC is a a great transition. Honestly, though, the CD was much more useful since it familiarized me with the actual computer format of the exam (although the CAT part of it is questionable - and be careful about doing too many practice questions from the book or the CD sice you might see some recylce on your 2 practice exams).

However, the best preparation is the GMAT 800 from Kaplan - it's not too great on the strategies, but if you learn by example like me, it's perfect since the examples are challenging and written for somebody aiming for above 93 percentile. I can't speak too much on the quant section, but the verbal section is awesome.

It has a great section on sentence correction which I found to be incredibly useful in improving my score. I really feel that by going through all the verbal questions, I learned the fundamental grammer that GMAT requires for a good score.

I was scoring on the practice in the mid 600s, and taking two days off work to completely go through the verbal section of this book was the key to getting me a 750 on the exam

Excellent book about Oracle XML database

This book is about Oracle XML programming. It covers many Oracle XML related topics like Oracle XDK, XML DB, JDeveloper, Oracle Text/Oracle Secure Enterprise Search (SES), and Oracle Application Express (APEX). For each topic, detailed examples are given and provided as download. I use the examples as a starting point to learn XML programming, Oracle XML DB and building Oracle XML DB applications.

The book is written a very readable style with plenty of code examples. I particularly like the tips and tricks in this book. This is the most up-to-date and practical Oracle XML programming book.

Not of much use

The pluses of this book are that it covers many Oracle XML topics and contains lots of examples.

The minuses are that many of the topics are not covered in any depth, the examples are barely explained at all and many do needlessly complex things which just obscures the point that the author is presumably trying to illustrate.

I am fairly proficient using the XML features of SQL Server and I was hoping this book would help me learn how to do the equivalent tasks in Oracle. Sadly it has not.

Nearly worthless. Barely explains anything about DBMS_XMLDOM and how to actually apply the scarcely described concepts, functions, and methods in the book to any real world scenarios. This is possibly the worst book I have ever purchased in my 25 years working in the IT profession. It's all about the what. Nothing about the why or how to do meaningful processing with the tools. Save your money.

This lyrically intense travelogue will provide historians of the not too distant future with a guide to a vanishing landscape and a lost culture. Tidwell (Mountains of Heaven) graphically recounts catching rides on shrimp boats and crab boats through the dark water swamps of southern Louisiana into the heart of Cajun country. Here, among the great blue heron, spoonbill, gar and gator, the reader meets bayou folk-from the honest and generous fishermen, who provide the author with room, board and transport for his work as a deck hand, to the disheveled backwoods healer who intrigues and tantalizes the writer with his shamanistic spells and incantations. It is these portraits of people on the edge of survival, living in a world where the land is sinking into the sea at a rate of 25 acres a day, that truly engage the reader. A variety of ecological factors have contributed to the subsidence of the Mississippi Delta. With good intentions to stop deadly floods, the Army Corps of Engineers constructed a vast network of levees and dams along the river, preventing the annual devastating floods of the past. Unfortunately, this also ended the yearly buildup of silt, necessary for the reinforcement and continued existence of the fragile marshlands in the low country. The nutrient-rich, but light, sandy soil cannot withstand the ceaseless eroding forces of ocean tide and winds. The author's descriptive powers, especially of people, provide the reader with enduring snapshots of a water-bound way of life that is sinking into history.

Alarmed that insufficient attention is paid to the erosion of Louisiana's bayou country, reportedly disappearing by two dozen square miles per year, Tidwell talked his way aboard shrimp boats to have a look around. Welcomed with beer-and-gumbo hospitality, Tidwell pitched in with the work as he collected the shrimpers' life stories and thoughts about the vanishing bayou banks. Tidwell also accompanied geomorphologists who study the slow-rolling catastrophe caused by both natural subsidence and the levees of the Mississippi, which prevent alluvial replenishment of land. The Cajuns Tidwell befriended already know this, but, with shoulder-shrugging fatalism, they generally feel powerless to affect the political or environmental process. After all, the proposed solution, a gigantic diversion of Old Man River, would take about two centuries. And the shrimping's still good (temporarily, warns the author) as readers discover in Tidwell's muscular, boisterous descriptions of netting the crustaceans. This book will make you sad, and it will make you angry!

A beautiful and sad book about the disappearance of Louisiana's bayou country, and with it, the way of life of the people who live there, the Cajun, Houma and Vietnamese fishermen and shrimpers who provide us with an amazin 30% of America's annual seafood harvest. Thanks to levees on the Mississippi, oil company canals, and other interference with nature, coastal Louisiana is losing land the size of Manhattan every year. The land is sinking, the barrier islands disappearing, and with them go protection against hurricanes, resting places for migratory birds, and a seafood-rich ecosystem.

That it is possible to halt the destruction of this habitat is known. The Atchafalaya River, Louisiana's second largest, still pours silt from its mouth to form new land, and small diversion projects are helping. But more and major diversions of the Mississippi, to allow it once again to build up the coast instead of dumping its silt over the continental shelf, must happen and happen quickly before it is too late.

Before, in the words of one shrimper, "Dere won't be no more nothin' left anymore, forever".

This was the required reading in an elective I took at Loyola University titled "Mississippi River Delta Ecology." The anecdotal nature of the book really weaved the more dry and quantitative teaching of the course together for me (along with field trips to Jean Lafitte and Grand Isle). I recommend it for anyone, though. It's a large reason that my amazon smile is for American Wetlands Foundation!

Post-Katrina revelation

Having read this book after Katrina's devastation, I can only wonder how many of those men and their families portrayed in this book survived Katrina and how much of their existence was forever washed out to sea.

This book should have been a wake up call. Tidwell places great emphasis (and rightly so) on the discrepancy between the attention AND funding being given to such tourist (and other money-making) attractions as the Chesapeake Bay and the Smokey Mountains - vs- the lack of attention and funding given to the massive erosion (now most probably gravely accelerated by Katrina) in the Louisiana Bayous.

After following Tidwell's travels, his observations, and getting to meet close-up those independent hearty survivors, those Cajun heroes who eke out a living in the Bayous, the reader now wonders -- Where will this lead? Is there really any time left to stem this continuing dreadful loss? What can we do to help?

The latest revision of this book has a Hurricane Katrina Afterword by Tidwell; one can only hope that this time his words are listened to and the long-awaited and promised improvements to the sedimentation of the Louisiana Coastline are (if it's not too late now!!) finally augmented. Tidwell sadly mentions the fact that many of the places he described in his book are now gone - obliterated from the landscape - carried away forever by Katrina. Many of the people he befriended and who came to life on the pages of this book are out of touch - he had not been able to contact them.

Let's hope that this book and its corresponding website(s) make inroads to at least stem the destruction of these vital wetlands and marshes -- AND the population (above AND below the waters) of that last bastion of Louisiana wilderness.

What makes a literary classic? In "Sensational Designs" Jane Tompkins argues that it is not the intrinsic merit of a text, but rather the circumstances of its writing. Against the modernist belief that art, in order to be art, must be free from propaganda, Tompkins contends that writers like Brockden Brown, Cooper, Stowe, and Warner wrote in order to alter the face of the social world, not to elicit aesthetic appreciation.Thus, the value and significance of the novels, for readers of their time, depended on precisely those characteristics that formalist criticism has taught us to deplore: stereotyped characters, sensational plots, and cliched language.

Decisive 4 19th Century American Literary Studies & History

Jane Tompkins' Sensational Design has had a revolutionary impact on the study and our understanding of "literature" and is also important to our understanding of 19th Century literature and women's studies as well. It is also nicely put together, clear, incisive, and provides the joy that comes from reading a book that explains things right that have been either explained wrong forever, or never explained before.

Literature and canon are artifical categories constructed after the fact usually under the impact of political, sexual, and social dominance, not necessarily literary achievement, whatever that is, and not at all readership. Tompkins explodes the idea of the American Literary Renaissance by pointing out that Sentimental Women Writers like Susan Warner and Harriet Beecher Stowe were selling hundreds of thousands of copies of their books, while Hawthrone never sold more than a few thousand coies of anything. Even with Hawthrone she explains how the different attitudes of readership and thought made the Marble Faun, a work much neglected and unread, be considered as his most important work in his time. She also does mention how history might not have been as kind to Hawthrone's place in literature had he not married his children into families that controled the Atlantic Monthly and what would become the Harvard Literature department.

More importantly, Tompkins unravels the mechanisms of the Sentimental novel such as Warner's The Wide Wide World and Stowe's immortal Uncle Tom. Tompkins explains how the text's purpose was the create "sympathy" seen in the physical form of tears, and how much of their approach corresponded with the notions of reality comment among its readership.

This work belongs on the shelf of anyone who seeks a serious knowledge of American literature and of 19th Century Culture. Moreover, the insights she provides on Uncle Tom make this book a must for people interested in the storm of literary discourse the book provoked among African American writers on one side and pro-slavery writers on the other.

How is a "Classic Text" Made?

This is one of the books that started the new-historical feminist reinterpretation of books that suffer as "bestsellers" and "pulp" (often women's literature) as history (and a group of "insiders") decide what books go on to become "classics" and which do not. Tompkins reveals the historical and socio-political factors that affected Nathaniel Hawthorne's "classic" status and shows us why other authors, including Harriet Beecher Stowe and Susan Warner, slipped into relative obscurity and/or disfavor following their popularity during their lifetimes. She does not dispute the richness of Hawthorne's writing, rather points out that the "canon" changes over time, and the books that fall in or out are subject to individual and political pressures. For anyone who ever wondered "why aren't there more books by "women/minorities/--- fill in blank" in the canon, this book is AN explanation. Maybe not the only one-- but a good explanation in very accessible language.

This book is a tad pricey but well worth it, if you're seriously interested in learning about Small Engines, he starts off at A and goes completely to Z. Evening describing a great deal if not all the tools needed, in detail. If you're an expert in the field you may or may not find much help, but if you're a beginner or intermediate skill level this is "The Book"

Good book IF you live in the UK!

The laws, codes and building types are all UK (Great Britain). Pretty useless in the good ole US of A.

All the structural stuff is in metric (Yea, I know we should use metric, but we don't).

And all the shapes are British Standard.

Heck of a nice book, but wrong country.

Her most recent book in the series, Alex O'Donnell & the 40 Cyberthieves, won the Catholic Arts and Letters award in 2011 for Best Young Adult Fiction. She also co-writes the Catholic Philosopher Chick romance novels. Habemus Papam! is her first graphic novel. Regina and her husband live in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley with seven of their eight children and assorted livestock, dogs, and cats. SEAN LAM (ARTIST) is a professional artist specializing in both American-style comic books as well as Japanese anime and manga. In addition to illustrating the Paul: Tarsus to Redemption, Judith: Captive to Conqueror, and Many Are Called manga series, Sean is currently illustrating other graphic novels for the publisher, Manga Hero. His past works include the 480-page single volume manga, It Takes A Wizard, published by Seven Seas Entertainment and several instructional art books, where he was lead artist. A graduate in graphic design from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore, Sean worked in advertising as a creative and art director before pursuing his passion for illustrating.

A personal portrait of a private, but great man

The author and artist did a fantastic job on painting such a wonderful portrait of the personal side of such a public man. It's even more amazing that the majority of the storyline is based on true events! I think this readable form will definitely make the pope much more relate-able and clears up many common misconceptions about the man, his role, and his reputation. Of the many religious, theological and philosophical books that I've encountered, this one is definitely a truly thought-provoking and deeply touching at the same time. Some of the flashbacks weren't easy to follow, but they made sense in the course of the storyline. I thoroughly enjoyed the biographical, educational, and especially the personal aspects of this novel. I would highly recommend anyone who already has an opinion or wants to have an opinion about the pope to read this and get to know him.

Great gift for all tweens and teens who want to know about a great leader

Habemus Papam: Pope Benedict XVI is a fabulous resource for learning about Pope Benedict ... the man of faith and love who has often been misrepresented, misinterpreted in our secular world. The story, written by renowned Catholic author, Regina Doman, captures Pope Benedict's life magnificently. Within the manga-story telling genre, Doman has captured his fears, his sacrifices, his love of family. But, most importantly, Doman has captured the Holy Father's life-long faith and trust in God's providence, in Divine wisdom.

The book opens with then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger at the Papal Conclave. He cannot believe anyone would want him to be Pope. He is scared of the responsibilities and his lack of skills to guide the Church during the turbulent 21st century. But his prayer, his answer to God's call is not "no" but rather a reiteration of the Blessed Mother's: "Thy will be done".

The story then shifts to flashback: to young Joseph's life in pre-Hitler Bavaria; his father's work against the rising Nazi menace; the move from their home-town to get away from possible retributions as Hitler rises to power. As Joseph becomes a teen-ager, pressured to join the Hitler Youth Movement, to join-up and fight for the "Fatherland", Joseph is again filled with fear and uncertainty. But rather than giving up or giving in, he again prays for wisdom and again accepts God's providence and protection: "Thy will be done."

The book continues, describing specific events that defined Benedict's pastoral and academic life and his constant "yes"; bringing the story back to the present and World Youth days and papal activities.

But Habemus Papam is not an in-depth analysis of Pope Benedict's life. Doman avoided the deep theology and Catholic teachings prevalent in so much of Pope Benedict's work in order to make the book attractive to the primary audience: tweens and teens. Instead, she focused on those parts of his life that suit the manga-style: the majestic mountains of Bavaria, the conflicts with the Nazis, the heroism of Pope Benedict's predecessor, Blessed John Paul II. And the story she weaves is entertaining ... while evangelizing.

I highly recommend this book for all tweens and teens who want to know about the man behind the myths, the man who loves God above all else and puts his faith in Him. Excellent!

A ray of truth amid all the nasty gossip

I loved this manga story. It is based on very reliable sources and depicts the life of Pope Benedict the Great. The author is very careful to note in back which bits are fictitious, and there are only a couple of parts that just add characterisation.
Very informative about the life of the Vatican too and the changes and challenges that have befallen it. Although in manga form it is very moving in parts, such as where the Holy Father takes the rap for all the evil-doers who have infiltrated the Church, as only Christ would have done, and he even met with victims of abuse and comforted them personally.
I came away with a renewed respect and affection for this holy, humble, erudite yet loving Bible scholar whom we are greatly gifted to have as the leader of the Christian world. Whether folk follow his wise guidance is another matter; there are many rebellious spirits.
This Holy Father is a model of courage and virtue and this book and the illustrations, captures this very well.
I warmly recommend this book for Catholics and anyone who would like to learn a little something about what the much derided Papacy really is.
