Ben Mearns lives in Philadelphia, PA, where he consults, teaches, advises, speaks, and creates around geographic information. At present, he is involved in private practice; previously, he held the positions of the Lead Geospatial Information Consultant and Instructor of GIS for Natural Resource Management at the University of Delaware. Ben has held other GIS and data positions at the University of Pennsylvania, Cartographic Modeling Lab, Princeton University, and Macalester College. Surprising source of tips, tricks and further development for QGIS users

What a lovely surprise this book was, the title doesn't really do the book justice. The book covers some of the more advanced/intermediate concepts and tasks which GIS consultants and technicians might face.
Written clearly and easy for even the new user to understand, this covers subjects such as; analysing raster data for suitability, network analysis (routing) and web mapping. The concepts are explained well and there are clear steps to reproducing results demonstrated.
I've looked at using pgRouting to calculate shortest path analysis with QGIS in the past, after reading this I was able to easily draw up some network paths.
In summary, like with Anita Grasers' introduction to QGIS, this is a swiss army knife of neat tips & tricks which will open up your QGIS from a meagre desktop software to a fully functioning death star.

A good reconnaissance for advanced use of QGIS

As an intermediate QGIS-user, I bought his book to explore more advanced use of QGIS and the overlap with other GIS products. For exploring the current advanced possibilities (November 2015), this book is a great source of information. Unfortunately it is written as a cookbook, without much explanation of the workflows, steps, settings and results. But, for covering so much topics in 250 pages, this may be understandable. A point of criticism is the inaccuracy of the book and accompanying files. I encountered many inaccuracies and in some occasions had to invent missing shapefiles myself to continue the workflow. Nevertheless, this book is good as a reconnaissance and I learned a lot from it.

Useful and clear

I bought this book to improve my skills in GIS analysis. I was looking for a clear practical manual concerning the use of Qgis, and I found QGIS Blueprints very useful and satisfactory to my needs. In particular, I appreciated the in-depth explanations of the matters through step-by-step instructions and the screenshots of commands and outputs. The only "wrong note" is that not all the treated arguments are at the same level. Some of them are more advanced than others (at least for me), for instance, the chapter about the "dynamic web application".

Yes- I recommend this book. I felt inspired to write this only because "Bots, Come!" is cool. Just Read It.

If you want to know what the future looks like, Will Schmitz suggests "bios" will continue to act the same as they ever have. The unknown quantity revealed, in his collection of ultra short stories, providing the new twists for bios are the "bots" and their potentials. And his writing style- part sci prose, part fi poetic- delivers the goods where pop sci-fi never thought to go.

This is easily the greatest book on an artistic subculture that formed around a group of kids in Virginia. AMAZING stuff here. If you want to read it, I bet your eyes would be beneficial to you. I wouldn't reccomend trading your eyeballs for this book, since in doing so you'll have surrendered your ability to appreciate such a fantastic book. I haven't read it. I made that mistake. luckily I'm a quarter reptillian, and they'll grow back twice as foxy...

Wow. That's all I can say about this beautiful book. GWAR has been a part of my life for around 25 years and I'm so happy to see this. You can tell this was done with a lot of love. Awesome job Bob Gorman. Now be a good slave and get this. RIP Dave Brockie - one of the most underappreciated vocalist ever.

You'll either love it or hate it, either way read it.

Everyone should read this book. Because identity, power, and the present are so wrapped up in how we interpret the past, the book is essential for understanding how there are multiple valid interpretations of history that can exist and be interwoven. Warning: some knowledge of Stonehenge is required to comprehend certain parts of the book.

Literally the worst book I have ever read....

My God, where to start.....

This is the kind of fuzzy headed touchy-feely stuff that you were warned about by anyone with even a bare conception of scientific knowledge is about. Bender "is" an archaeologist, but quite frankly you wouldn't notice as she spends most of her time talking about dirty Caucasian hippies and how "abused" they are by the British state. Multivocality should of course be a part of any good archaeological study, the voices of women, children, and other overlooked persons in the past is necessary to present a complete view of it, but Bender takes multivocality so far as to equate the aforementioned hippies with abused and downtrodden people in the third world, something that even Ian Hodder(the king of fuzzy logic and sloppy conjecture)takes her to task for during one of the Dialogue "chapters".

That brings us to the structure of the book itself (or lack thereof). Bender obviously considers herself a brilliant post-modernist by doing away with such things as linear narrative, authoritative voice, and traditional writing. in the end, it comes off as lazy and ill-conceived. Four of the eight chapters consist solely of apparently recoded/email conversations with academics and activists lacking in both context and usefulness. One chapter engages the use of cartoons to illuminate her own personal and the book's theoretical background (a good idea in theory, academics should be self reflexive)but the execution is so slapdash that it imparts knowledge no better than the densest and most inaccessible theory chapter written by the type of academic she claims to be reacting against.

This is a college text-book, there is no doubt about it (hell, look at the price). However, if the author of such a book essentially reduces their experience and expertise down to the thesis that "everyone's ideas matter" it is quite useless for students seeking to broaden their understanding in pursuit of a degree. As students we are paying to be tutored by those who know more than us about a particular subject so that we can go out into the world of work with at least a starting point of knowledge from which to generate our own expertise, refusing to take on the role of an experienced professional makes any academic author or professor lazy at best and a thief at worst.
