If I Were In Her Shoes....

How often I think to myself, "If I were in her shoes, I would...."
In Cara Achterberg's novel, I'M NOT HER, readers get to live out this fantasy through the characters LeAnn and Carin, who do indeed switch places in a strange twist of fate. Although there are lots of campy movies and books out there about switching bodies, this is not one of them. Achterberg's characters are complicated and multi-dimensional and their journeys teach lessons we don't expect. A little boy and his neighbor Mr. G are some of my favorite characters in the book, as they reveal that deep understanding and compassion can come from unexpected places. The main characters, who had taken certain things for granted in life, discover new aspirations and a road to authenticity that made me applaud inside (yay for them!) I'M NOT HER is a great read and a fun story. Highly recommended.

Couldn't Put It Down

“I’m Not Her” was a book club pick so I gathered up my lawn chair and a pencil and headed out to the patio to read for half an hour or so. I brought the pencil because I intended on highlighting things to talk about at the book club meeting. Three hours later I realized that I needed to get up and make dinner. I was so lost in the characters and storyline that time just slipped away. I never made a single mark in the book because I couldn’t stop long enough to pick up my pencil – it was that addicting. There are other enjoyable reads out there, but what makes this one of my all-time favorites is that it puts you squarely in the shoes of someone less fortunate and really helps you appreciate that judging others is wrong. Our circumstances in life make us who we are. Who is to say what we would have become had we grown up without so many advantages? The genius of the book is that it makes this point through characters that you grow to love. I read “I’m Not Her” so fast that I need to read it again before book club so I can remember the details. I can’t ever remember reading a book twice, but I can hardly wait to read “I’m Not Her” again!

More than meets the eye.

Yes, it’s a ‘Freaky Friday’ theme, one we’ve seen before. But it is way more than meets the eye. Cara Achterberg has intertwined the vastly different lives of two women, Carin and Leann. The story unfolds quickly with no real explanation of the paranormal event. But that is okay. Like so many things in real life ‘it is what it is’, just get on with dealing with it. And Ms. Achterberg does just that because she has so much more to share with us. Her characters and their lives feel real. You will worry for them; feel in awe of them; and at times, definitely feel indignant and stunned at what lies below the surface of these two women’s lives. “I’m Not Her” is a quick read, but I believe something about this story will stick with you. I highly recommend reading it because not only is it an interesting, well-written story, it is a reminder that we don’t always see another’s full life. There is almost always more to it than meets the eye.

A MUST read if you are heading for the Cooks!

We just got back from a two week exploration of the Cooks and found this book VERY helpful. The Cooks will quickly convince you that if you've only been to Hawaii, you've only gone half way to Heaven!
Unfortunately, we required hospital services (because of tainted food), and this book over simplifies issues of needed medical care. (Details that should be included in EVERY travel guide!)
Naturally, most prices quoted are actually higher, but that's just dealing with reality.
We observed "newbies" arriving without this book, and therefore, without a clue of where to go or what to do.
FOUR Stars because this book was so valuable, but as with most, there is room for improvement.

The author carried high imperial titles and lived in both the Forbidden City and the New Summer Palace. In 1934, Johnston looked for a residence in Scotland to retire to. He found a house on Eilean Righ, a small island in Loch Craignish, some 9 miles (15 km) NW of Lochgilphead. He moved there with his enormous library, which included a Chinese Encylopaedia in 1734 volumes and a complete collection of Buddhist scriptures in 1500 volumes. Twilight in the Forbidden City is very much a history of an entire period and not an exclusive portrait of the last Emperor of China. Twilight in the Forbidden City is prefaced by the Emperor Hsüan-T'ung himself in the year 1931 Chosen by Dowager Empress Cixi while on her deathbed, Puyi ascended the throne at age 2 years 10 months in December 1908 following his uncle's death on November 14. Puyi's introduction to emperorship began when palace officials arrived at his family household to take him. Puyi screamed and resisted as the officials ordered the eunuchs to pick him up. His wet-nurse, Wen-Chao Wang, was the only one who could console him, and therefore accompanied Puyi to the Forbidden City. Puyi would not see his real mother again for six years. Puyi's upbringing was hardly conducive to the raising of a healthy, well-balanced child. Overnight, he was treated as a god and unable to behave as a child. The adults in his life, save his wet-nurse Mrs. Wang, were all strangers, remote, distant, and unable to discipline him. Wherever he went, grown men would kneel to the floor in a ritual kow-tow, averting their eyes until he passed.

Superb Book from a great Chinese Scholar!

Johnston's book Twilight in the Forbidden City (1934) describes his experiences in Beijing and was used as a source for Bernardo Bertolucci's film dramatisation of Puyi's life The Last Emperor. He was portrayed by Peter O'Toole in the film.

This book describes the last of the Manchu Dynasty whose power had been crumbling for nearly a hundred years due to foreign wars and internal revolts and China lay helpless at the feet of foreign powers.

Today with rapid its economic leaps forwards and a place in the UN Security Council and its huge powerhouse of an economy - China is on its feet again. The days of the Manchu's are a distant memory and the army of courtiers and eunuchs that you that serve the emperors of the middle kingdom are long forgotten.

The book is fascinating as it takes on back to a bygone age and culture. However everyone needs to read this book to understand the China that was. Only from its past can one understand the China today in its true historical perspective.

The book is great if you are of Chinese heritage or if you are just thinking of visiting china or just interested in history of this ancient land and its people.

A very interesting book, but...

be advised this book is a reprint. It looks like they photocopied (badly) the original book and then printed from that. The text varies tremendously in readability and density. I should have noticed that the title text on the cover isn't even centered over the illustration. So just don't expect it to appear as a brand new, newly set book. It isn't

About the Author
Amy Haimerl is a professor of journalism at Michigan State University and covers small business and urban policy for Fortune, Reuters and the New York Times. She was the entrepreneurship editor at Crain's Detroit Business, where she covered the city's historic bankruptcy trial. She is an alum of Fortune Small Business, CNNMoney and USAA Magazine, as well as a former Knight-Wallace Fellow at the University of Michigan. She lives in Detroit with her husband, Karl; two pitbulls, Maddie and Beaubien; and stray cat, Jack, who is the boss of everyone.

Excellent read

An easy and honest read about the joys and challenges of investing in one of Detroit's many storied but neglected homes, and the power of strong communities. As we live in Ann Arbor, we were able to visit Matilda (she looks great!) and see for ourselves what West Village is becoming. Its former glory is palpable, and its resurgence evident in the new businesses, neighbors chatting on porches, and rehab of homes. Kudos to Amy and Karl for taking a risk and seeing what Matilda and the neighborhood could be. If you go to West Village, you must stop by Craft Works, one of the neighborhood restaurants. Delicious and fun!

A fascinating adventure

I'm very interested in restoring old homes to their original glory so I was interested in reading about Amy's experience. But the book is more than just about the restoration; it's about Detroit and the people and assimilating into the the fabric of a neighborhood that's been beaten down and is very slowly on the rise.

I found Amy Haimerl's memoir to be a hilarious, touching and thoughtful tribute to the power of daring and acting on the courage of her conviction. Her book also offers perceptive insights into the history and present condition on the conundrum of Detroit, a city both maligned and misunderstood. Detroit Hustle was that rare book that made me want to stand up and cheer.

Strategic planning made understandable

This is a basic management textbook in strategic planning. Unlike so many of its genre, Global Strategic Planning is easy to read, even for one not taking a management course. It is a complete and up-to-date review of management theory and practice for global organizations, and it provides the extra value of addressing, as few non-specialized textbooks do, the implications of contemporary management praxis for public and non-profit organizations.

Katsioloudes grounds the strategic planning process in the basics of management. He then goes on to examine it a step at a time, addressing first the issues and objectives of strategic planning. He then looks at each of the common tools by which strategy is formulated, carried out, controlled and evaluated. The orientation is very much “how to” with an examination of the options that the planner has for creating an appropriate niche in the global market place.

Some years ago, I predicted that diversity and intercultural awareness will have come of age when they were no longer just separately addressed topics but fully integrated into the subject matter of the issues to which they were relevant. This is what Katsioloudes seems to attempt in the scant 400 pages of this volume. There are points at which the boilerplate of intercultural theory is explicitly addressed for the sake of the beginning student, but this is not the kind of book to which a student or reader will go to expect lots of answers to culture-specific answers to questions like, “When I am in X country, do I discuss business over cocktails?” It is not a book about culture or cultures but about the planning in a multicultural global context. Unfortunately, it will be up to other authors to examine the cultural assumptions of the planning process itself, a task that is growing in importance with as activism and resistance to globalization increase.

Specific international concerns emerge passim and in the lengthier treatment in the two chapters of Part Five of the book where the strategic planning process is examined for its global dimensions and its implications for doing business with newly emerging market economies, but what is discussed here is the business climate of these places in the light of their recent history, not the dynamics of cultural behavior..

Katsioloudes pays generous attention to planning in the public and non-profit sectors. It should go without saying that such organizations need to both plan and market themselves to be effective at achieving their objectives. Global Strategic Planning quickly and effectively discusses how they may achieve this, paying attention to everything from national campaigns to raffle tickets. The dynamics of planning and branding are not peculiar to business, just more highly developed there, so even the most altruistic volunteer organization need not feel tainted by using them, even if their objective is the reform of some part of the business world itself. The adoption of such useful practices is made easy by Katsioloudes clear exposition and matter-of-fact style.

While hardly any publisher today provides margins in which to make one’s notes and Global Strategic Planning is no exception, Butterworth-Heinemann is nonetheless to be commended for the pleasant and readable layout and choice of typefaces. This is a book that looks and feels good.

Who should be using this book? Certainly it is the pick of the litter for management education in colleges and training institutes. Further it provides a quick update for managers in the field who would like to refresh their framework for strategic decision making. Finally it provides a fine consolidation of background information for interculturalists and human resource professionals about the contexts in which they need to perform their best work.

A seminal contribution to American Art History

With an informative text co-authored by Caleb Neelon and 'Zio', "Saber: Mad Society" is a collection showcasing graffiti wall-art as compiled and edited by Roger Gastman. Examples are taken from Los Angeles, San Francisco, and elsewhere to exemplify the style, placement and proliferation of this unique and often transitory artwork which ranges from the simple to the complex, and from the amateur to the professional. The patterns, colors, images depicted in these examples are truly impressive. The commentary provided is truly informative. Combined, they make "Saber: Mad Society" a seminal contribution to American Art History and inclusion into academic library and university art department reference collections.

The book was overall good and exciting with lots of laughs. Its kind of a kids book sort of speak... for graff writers. Mostly short storys and tons of pics. It can also be finished in one day, although i took two.

It starts out by going into sab's upbringing, which was acually interesting, kind of all makes sense. youll know what i mean when u read it.

Than it quickly dives into some of sab's legendary illegals and stomping grounds for AWR and MSK. It also grazes into a few other peoples lifes and tells some things that most people dont know.

I only wish he told more. I guess i feel that i got the short story of it all and i was in for the long. Im also very dissapointed that he never really got into king AYERS story, kinda just skipped over him.

all in all, its a book worth picking up for the price.

to sum it all up:
amazing artwork. deep, funny look into the life. in kind of a short story form.

If you are not familiar with Saber then get this book! if you are familiar with saber then get this book!!!! The book goes into detail about his childhood and through his teenage years with ALOT of artwork. The stories are in detail and pull you right in! truly a great book about a west coast graffiti artist! i couldn't find this book for a while and i found it on Amazon at a really good price, so dont wait... GET IT!
