Are you kidding me?

The re-printing of this beautiful Tarot deck is utter rubbish. The amazingly intricate drawings of Godfrey Dowson have been blurred and pixilated to an embarrassing degree. Also, the cards themselves were cut irregularly, so no two cards were even uniformly shaped. Seriously, I could go down to Kinkos and make better replications of these cards! In this day and age of technology there is no excuse for blurry pixilation and irregularly cut cards. If you think that you are getting the inspiring original printing of these cards, you will be sadly mistaken.

I've contacted U.S. Games Systems and they have ignored me. I tried to warn customers on their site but they didn't post my review. If I were to speculate, I would think that they are trying to retain the inflated value of the original printing by releasing a disgustingly low quality representation in their latest re-printing at the expense of you, the customer. Buyer beware.

Update: I have posted two pictures which capture the quality issues I mention; one of the poorly clipped corner and one of flagrant pixelation. Please note that this pixelation is not due to my scanner but is an exact replica of the shoddy quality. In the original printing, these lines were razor sharp and clean. They are now a blurry mess. If someone could post a similar picture of VIII, Fortitude, I would be grateful, just to make sure I didn't get a shoddy deck.

Wonderful Deck to Study

This is an excellent deck for those who wish to study the literature and symbolism of the tarot. In interpretation, it falls between the Waite deck and the Thoth deck. So it is a good choice for people who want to move up from the Waite, but do not care for the Crowley deck's card substitutions (no "Lust" or "Debauch" cards) or creepy emanations.

These cards are loaded with symbolism, including zodiac and planet signs on the minors. The court cards are marked with elemental signs on the margins. One of these is incorrect, however you can easily correct it with a fine black sharpie pen. If you add your own information or symbols with a black sharpie, the change will blend right in, due to the freehand style of these cards. I suppose you could color them, but I am not yet that ambitious.

The LWB contains a tree of life path diagram. However this is the "Outer Order" diagram given by the Golden Dawn to Neophytes, and therefore has the paths running in the wrong direction. The Inner Order will provide the correct attributions on request.

This is a serious, heavy duty tarot deck. Cards are thick and heavily coated. They are stiff and slippery when new, but gradually become easier to handle.

This deck was out of print for a few years, so there are quite a few "gray market" decks out there. The reviewers who complained about quality probably had gotten one of those. Both the legitimate and the gray market cards come in the same box pattern with U.S. Game System Copyrights for 1979 and 2006. The gray market cards have a thin line around the border of the card which may have gaps due to poor reproduction. The legitimate cards with the 2006 copyright do not have this border line.

The legitimate cards are of the very highest quality in reproduction and cutting. So if you get a deck that is not perfect, send it back for a replacement.

Most wanted deck...

Many years ago, I was given a reading with this deck. I was frightened and amazed by what I saw. Sheer Magic in its purest form. This is THE occult tarot deck. More so than the Crowley-Thoth. I thought someday I would like a copy of this precious artifact. I guess I waited too long as it is now out of print. What a shame when the folks at U.S. Games have multiple renditions of the Rider-Waite deck for sale, among others that do not hold any interest to me.

Maybe it is because of the black and white presentation. It could simply be too scary for many! It is no less dark than others on the current market. I really wish someone else would pick up rights to this masterwork and get it back in publication. Or better yet, how about U.S. Games doing so. They are great at what they do. Except holding back this classic and others.

I finally purchased my copy of this deck from the publisher and love it. The LWB presents nothing new here. The deck itself is not ideal for beginners, 12 and older would do best. Astrologically, this system soars! It is also fun to see these images up close. Its possibly the most detailed tarot ever created.

An excellent commentary for the serious student of Hebrews

When studying the Epistle to the Hebrews, one may get lost in its beauty. But when one begins to study it in the Greek, they may get lost in the author's style, vocabulary, use of the Old Testament, and many other things. Thankfully, Paul Ellingworth has written a magisterial commentary that helps get the reader through the maze that is Hebrews. The introduction is excellent, and the commentary is superb! Ellingworth leaves no stone unturned, and for a Greek student like myself, this is priceless. If you could get one commentary on Hebrews, this may be just that one (it is hard to decide between William Lane and Ellingworth).

Scholarly and rich

Ellingworth's Hebrews commentary has to go on the short list of best commentaries on this crucial book. This is not for the casual layperson, but theology students, scholars and pastors who like deep, technical material from which to work. A knowledge of Greek is helpful as with most in the NIGTC series. If you are a serious student of Hebrews, this is one you should have on your shelf.

Ellingworth's effort deserves to be placed along Beale's Revelation commentary as two of the NIGTC's standouts.

From the Author
Traitors in Waiting is the first book in my Patriots series. I started writing it way back in 2001, when I was still in grad school at UC Santa Cruz, as a way to de-stress while writing my thesis. I had recently finished rereading Douglas Adams's Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series (highly recommended, BTW), and was thinking that I'd like to see more science fiction books written with a similarly snarky, cynical view of humanity. Not long after I started writing the book, Mr. Adams passed away, so I dedicated my Master's thesis to his memory and decided that I simply had to turn that still-in-progress short story into a full-blown novel.

The result was this book. By June of 2003, I had finished writing this book, and began writing the second book in the Patriots series, Enemies from Within. I finished writing that book some time in 2008 (and actually wrote the first few bits of the third book way back in 2006 while I was still writing EFW), but I didn't really start writing Beyond the Veil in earnest until about July of 2010--one of the hazards of fiction writing being a low-priority background project. By about April of 2011, I had finished writing the third book.

I've spent random bits of free time since then going through the books repeatedly and editing the verbiage, ensuring that the three books are properly synchronized (parts of all three books happen in parallel), building the production tools that I used to produce the PDFs for the print editions, plus two different EPUB (electronic) versions--one with all sorts of specific tweaks for Kindle readers, and one much more traditional version for EPUB readers.

And somewhere in there, I found the time to design all of the book covers, then redesign them with bigger, more readable fonts so that they'd look better in thumbnails, then redesign them again two or three more times as the final page counts and the final paperback dimensions changed (repeatedly). I also did some custom font design work, particularly for the electronic editions (for licensing reasons), though some of those tweaked fonts also made it into the print editions.

I've written various articles over on my blog about the publishing process in hindsight, and I have several more coming, so if you're curious about what goes into publishing a book, have a look, and check back often for more articles.

About the Author
David Gatwood, though relatively new to the fiction writing world, spent almost thirteen years of his life writing developer documentation for a major computer company before going back to writing software. His award-winning book on shell script programming has been compared with Kernighan and Ritchie in its style and coverage of the subject.

David is also a musician, writer, and hard-core geek. In addition to writing the Patriots series of books, he also did all of the content production and design, modified various fonts used in these books, and drew the cover art.

Besides writing books and software, David is an avid photographer, videographer, and musical composer. His choral music has been performed by the Diocesan Choir of Monterey, California and the contemporary choir at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Santa Cruz, CA. He spends much of his spare time performing with musical ensembles in the greater Santa Cruz area.

David also designed and maintains the websites for Gatwood Publishing, Patriots Books, Web-Scripted TV, the UCSC Wind Ensemble, Shell Script Games.com, and others.

Interesting and intriguing.

The book is very well written and quite readable. The characters are vivid and very intriguing. I wsoon came to “know” the characters. His writing is thorough and detailed. It was interesting to figure out who was who and when the events were occurring. I thoroughly enjoyed the books (all three of them) - and reread the first one. It was even more enjoyable the second time around. (My favorite is the third book of the series - it pull all of it together, and that's why I wanted to reread the series.)

I think any sci-fi geek would really get a kick out of the series.
