When Judy Myers is offered a relaxing vacation to get away from her latest heartbreak, she can’t say no. A cruise on her brother’s yacht sounds like heaven...until she realizes her brother’s best friend has been invited along for the ride.
Steven Stark is big, he’s loud, and he’s obviously not interested in the plump, plain little sister he used to tease unmercifully. In fact, he’s still quite happy to tease her – until she turns the tables on him. Now, Steven can’t seem to keep his thoughts, or his hands, to himself. And worse, Judy’s not sure she can resist the attraction she’s kept buried for so many years.
Being trapped on a boat isn’t the best place to be, when you’re suddenly thrown a hunky curveball.

Charlotte Stein is one of my favourite authors and this was the second (third?) book I read by her. Oh gosh, how do I even begin? It was a quick read but I spent the next day sitting at my work desk thinking about it so hard that I went home and re-read the whole thing. I'll admit that I'm a sucker for any book that has a heroine who isn't your slim to average sized heroine, or one who isn't curvy in a perfectly hour-glass shaped, bump free, J-Lo-esque way. But it's more than that; it's two characters who have been passing each other by for so long until one day the universe says "I've tormented them long enough" and a swimsuit, a diving expedition and Stein's very own R-rated version of Cocktail (sadly lacking in Kokomo) brings these two together.
Honestly, I'm hard-pressed to think of an author who is currently writing who does scenes as squirm inducing as Stein. When the dirty talk starts it doesn't feel like I'm reading from the Erotica Handbook where everything feels like a line -- polished, rehearsed and cliched. It feels real and raw and there are very few pretty words involved but it makes it all the more exciting. Stein also has a real knack for humour -- I find myself laughing out loud often during her books and this was no exception, with Judy's inner thoughts and Stephen's jocular sweetness.
In short: in a world where I've read every single one of Stein's books, this still ranks near the top.

Fun read
By Marie
I’ve made no secret of the fact that I’m a huge fan of Charlotte Stein’s work (love the new cover!). Her lead female characters are a bit quirky, self-deprecating and the kind of women you want to be friends with. Curve Ball is no different! While all of Stein’s books are unique, I know I can trust her to deliver with her typical writing style. Curve Ball is written in first person, heavy on the (hilarious) internal monologue and erotic without being dirty. Okay, there’s a little bit of dirtiness, but it’s very hot.
The story starts off with Judy on vacation on her brother’s yacht. She’s just come off a bad breakup and her brother and his wife invited her on vacation with them. She’s glad to get away for a trip around the Mediterranean (who wouldn’t be?) but she didn’t realize that Steven, her brother’s best friend (and at one time a best friend to her), was also invited. At the beginning of the vacation Steven is telling a story about a ‘fat chick’ he was having sex with and his tale sets Judy off. She’s had a crush on him forever and while she’s normally quiet, she totally lays into him about being a jerk and having gonorrhea (which he doesn’t). Her outburst surprises everyone, and at first she thinks she might have hurt Steven’s feelings, something she’s surprised he has. Then she realizes she must be wrong because he’s a gorgeous guy who can’t care what someone like her thinks (this is her thought process). But on a walking trip into one of the Mediterranean towns Steven follows her, apologizes, and things start to change between them. She was under the impression that he was making digs at her because of what *she* perceives as being a heavier girl.
From there the story gets really good. There were a lot of layers to this story and I like that it becomes clear that some of the previous misunderstandings between Judy and Steven are because Judy was so sure that ‘someone like him’ would never be interested in someone like her. She’s got some serious self-esteem issues but it never becomes annoying or whiny. It’s realistic. Her internal monologue is so funny and if it had been any other author I might have passed on the book after the original scene with Steven, but I knew Stein wouldn’t let me down. And she didn’t. Steven is really a great guy and a little misunderstood (some of it is definitely his own fault, but that first scene is completely explained) but once he decides to go for Judy, he does full force. Even though she didn’t seem to comprehend his intentions, it was clear that was because of her own perceptions.
Curve Ball is an erotic romance with a lot of depth, a funny heroine, and a happy ending. For the price, it’s impossible to pass up! It’s going on my keeper shelf and I’ll definitely be reading it again.

Ended with happy for right this moment.
By Helen
I generally love Charlotte Stein. Her h's inner dialogue is usually laugh out loud good. I completely enjoyed this book until the end. It ended so abruptly it was jarring like making a misstep off the curb. This book needed an epilogue. Without an epilogue I would not even call it a happy for now but more like a happy for right this moment. I needed at least a little closure to really enjoy this story.
