One of the best informative books on my Kindle!
By Dylan Morris
Bought this book to learn how to care for my recently purchased Crayfish and it gives lots of detail and description-it even goes into detail about how to catch a wild crawfish to keep in a fish tank. The only con about it is it focuses on all species in general-it does not go into excessive detail about different crayfish species. This book inspired me to go out to my local pond and guess what i caught after 5 rock flips??!! A crayfish!! This book is the best guide to keeping healthy, happy, and well fed crayfish!! Highly Reccommend!

Ultimate? Far from it...
By WildScalare
Happily I only borrowed this book under my Prime membership. This "guide" is so generic, so full of repetitive fluff, and so sparse of barely correct information that the $3.99 Kindle price tag is grossly excessive. The single impressive aspect of this e-book is the beautiful cover photo, and I couldn't even find an identification of the pictured crayfish species, a glaring and telling omission.

Keeping a few pet crayfish doesn't automatically visit a person with expertise on the subject, and this book painfully demonstrates that fact. There is nothing here that a ten minute internet search wouldn't reveal, and sadly that information is often equally lacking. Many crayfish will survive the conditions outlined here, but that doesn't mean they are necessarily species appropriate or ideal. Basically the author simply describes some modifications required to house crayfish in a generic freshwater fish tank set up, not how to create a good crayfish specific habitat.

On one page, the author correctly advises that North American species do best in unheated tanks between 55° to 70° yet he follows up with the advice to include an "algae eater". He must be referring to a species of Pleco or possibly a Chinese or Siamese algae eater, all of which are tropical fish requiring much higher temperatures and many need extremely large tanks. Most if properly kept should outlive a crayfish by years or even decades, casually adding one for "clean up duties" is irresponsible. Crayfish are scavengers and also quite fond of many types of algae so unless overfed shouldn't need help anyway.
He often refers to "cycling" the water in a context that seems to actually just mean changing some of it. Cycling and water changes are two completely different processes in an aquarium and his use of the term is confusing.
In the chapter on breeding, he admits to only having two females produce young and never actually witnessing the matings. He consistently refers to "pregnant" female crayfish. Just as birds do not become pregnant, neither do crayfish. They lay eggs. During mating, the male places a sperm packet in a receptacle on the female. At a later time of her choosing she lays and exposes her eggs to the sperm before "gluing" them under her tail to protect and carry while they incubate.
He also advises on creating the proper environment to "induce" crayfish to mate, which for the species he's covering is generally irrelevant. Adult males alternate at molting between form 1(breeding form) and form 2 (non-breeding). A form 2 male cannot breed regardless of wine and candlelight. Otherwise, an adult pair usually need only be placed together. If they are ready, they mate usually within minutes. If they are not, they may fight or ignore each other. There is no pair bonding and little getting to know each other. Keeping more than one cray per tank is almost always a mistake with the commonly available pet shop species (P. Clarkii and P. Alleni) as they are both aggressive and canabilistic.
He also claims that newly hatched crays (not "given birth to" as he incorrectly calls it) prefer vegetable matter. This may seem the case, but young and probably older crayfish eat decaying vegetation mainly for the protein rich bacteria and microorganisms in the layer of bio-film covering it, something the boiled lettuce he recommends feeding them will completely lack until it has been in the tank a while. Baby crayfish grow and molt at a phenomenal rate and likely require a more protien rich diet than an adult. Newly hatched young will continue to return to the mother's tail until they have molted several times. Then, given room, plants, hiding, clean water, and a good diet they are not the least bit difficult to raise contrary to the author's opinion. The only real danger to them is their cannibalistic siblings. How many survive depends almost entirely on how many you are willing to protect from the others.

I expanded my review a bit more than I intended. I wanted to correct at least some of the information put forth in this book. I also added some pictures, not great quality but hopefully useful to anyone interested in these critters.

I strongly suggest buying Jerry G. Walls book "Crawfishes of Louisiana" if you truly want an authoritative and valuable source of information.
