Amazon.com Review
Just like It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown and A Charlie Brown Valentine, this illustrated read-along seeks to re-create the popular Peanuts TV show of the same name. This edition also includes a four-song sampler CD from jazz-great Vince Guaraldi's brilliant soundtrack.
With illustrator Paige Braddock aping Charles Schulz's style, A Charlie Brown Christmas retells the Emmy Award-winning program blow-by-blow (with a few omissions), from the ice-skating opening scene to preparations for the school pageant to Charlie Brown's ill-fated Christmas tree rescue. Braddock almost perfectly mimics the show's cast and backdrops, but just as no one could be fooled by even expert impersonation of a loved one, Peanuts fans might find the niggling differences distracting (whether it's Schroeder's too-wavy hair or Pig Pen's just-too-small head).
A "novelization" like this probably can't ever hope to completely recapture the charm of the original, even if it had used Schulz's original art. Although the dialogue has been faithfully reproduced, much of the story's subtle appeal and cultural subtext gets lost in the book's simplified exposition--which is too bad, given that these are precisely the qualities which have made the show (and Schulz's timeless strip) so durable and well-loved in the first place. (Ages 4 to 8) --Paul Hughes
From School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2—On December 9, 1965, the animated special A Charlie Brown Christmas was originally aired on CBS, and a tradition was born. The book version of the story has been published many times over the last 50 years, with different authors taking on the challenge of adapting it to the page. This 50th anniversary edition presents a very streamlined tale, told in the present tense. Readers never find out, for example, that the play Charlie Brown is supposed to direct is a Nativity play. Still, the main points are all there—Snoopy's well-decorated dog house, little Sally's avaricious letter to Santa, Linus's brief but powerful reminder of the original Christmas story, and Charlie Brown's sad little tree, which becomes something special when the gang works together to decorate it. This paperback edition with glitter on the cover may not last for 50 years, but it hits the important notes and might do better with younger readers/listeners. VERDICT Buy a few extra copies of this perennial favorite.—Mara Alpert, Los Angeles Public Library

Should have just reissued the original
By Stephen J. Van Hook
I love "A Charlie Brown Christmas" and so was completely disappointed by this paperback book edition of the story.
The "By Charles M. Schulz" on the cover and in the listing hides the fact that the text is not by Schulz, but is "adapted" by other people. The text adaptation is painfully bad -- I could barely force myself to read it to my child the other night. The text is way too wordy, which contradicts the whole style of Schulz's comic strip, and changes key dialog of characters.
The illustrations are okay, but why not just use the original drawings by Schulz himself?
A book version of A Charlie Brown Christmas was printed in the 1960's; the publishers would have been smarter to reissue the original book rather than create this new version.
If you want to have a book version of A Charlie Brown Christmas, I highly recommend that you spend a bit more money and buy the hardcover book, "A Charlie Brown Christmas: the Making of a Tradition". You won't regret it.

Peanuts will live forever
By Don Barrie
I got this book for Christmas, and it does not disappoint. It contains all the strips from the final year (Jan. 1, 1999 to Feb. 13, 2000), and it's great to have it all in one book. And my copy contains the actual final strip published the weekend Charles Schulz died. He may have left us, but books like this one prove that we can revisit Charlie Brown, Snoopy and their pals any time we want. Thank you, Mr. Schulz.

Happiness is another Peanuts book. Even if it's the Last One
By Barry Pearl
It was with great sadness that I read the final Peanuts strips. The strips were fantastic and funny as always. But I did know that this was the end.
Charlie Brown would never get another chance to kick the football or win a baseball game. His love would go unrequited, as it had for 50 years. Charlie Brown reminds us, "The inside of a mailbox should always be kept clean in case you get a love letter." But he received no valentines this year either. Marcia and Peppermint Patty never got a chance to tell them how they felt. I don't know if Snoopy ever got to Bill Maudlin's house on Veteran's Day either. But if Charles Schultz were still here, would they eventually be successful? As Charlie Brown once said, "Never stay awake at night asking yourself questions you can't answer."
Peanuts seemed at first glance to be a simple strip. But it is complex and full of meaning. I read my first Peanuts strip in 1958 and they have only gotten better. The different characters seemed to be different parts of Charles Schultz. They are funny and they are thoughtful. This book is a perfect example of that.
(Missing from the first edition was the good-bye from Mr. Schultz. I wrote a letter to Random House about this. They sent be, at no charge, a copy of the next edition.)
So within the sadness there is laughter. The book is perfect Peanuts. And while his books will last forever, it is time to say goodbye. Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Linus.......Charles Schultz, how could we ever forget you?
