A solid and comprehensive foundation

I've been writing a student guide for an undergraduate course on change management. It's a messy, complicated subject area, and some textbooks reflect that messiness. But I believe there are some sensible and useful things that can be said on the subject, and one would hope there are writers who can distil these messages well. I'm happy to say that Senior and Swailes do the job beautifully. Nothing will make the work of organizational change simple, but you need to have a clear framework to guide you, and the book offers this. It's also wrapped up in a quality presentation, another thing one would hope for after several decades of textbook publishing. Everything one would expect is nicely attended to - learning objectives for each chapter, case examples, questions, and references.
For trusting students, the book gives you concepts from the leading authorities on the topics. For example, you would want a chapter on culture to mention Hofstede, and the book does. I have great respect for Elliott Jacques' ideas about culture, and he is also quoted.
I was also interested in the scope of topics, given that I was handed a course outline on which to base the student guide. Senior and Swailes' book held up well, addressing most of the topics I had to play with. One thing: it doesn't say much about ethics and organizational change, which is a shame, because my primary topic area is business ethics. Admittedly, few books on organizational change fare better. But, as the Dalai Lama says, ethics lies at the core of our existence. So let's talk about it.
